FREEPORT — A Brazosport High School teacher who resigned after rumors began circulating she had sex with a 16-year-old student at an after-prom party turned herself in to Freeport police Wednesday afternoon.
Nikki Marlise Scherwitz, 25, of Clute is charged with sexual assault of a child and improper relationship between an educator and a student, both second-degree felonies. If convicted, Scherwitz faces up to 20 years in prison on each count.
Brazosport ISD officials initially received a report alleging a female teacher had been “in the presence of students at an off-campus, non-school event,” district spokeswoman Tami Sophia said in a news release.
The “non-school event” was an after-prom party where alcohol and marijuana were present, said Freeport police Interim Lt. Raymond Garivey, who is supervising the criminal investigations division.
Before Scherwitz resigned April 22, she was a 10th-grade English teacher at Brazosport High School, Garivey said.
Freeport police had been investigating the teacher for more than a week, after Brazosport ISD officials notified them of the incident.
Scherwitz was being held at the Freeport jail Wednesday on $50,000 bond.
