On May 5, 1959, with the strains of the “Marine Corps Hymn” echoing across the massive parade field of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, I became a Marine. My graduation was a turning point in my life.

A healthy addiction: volunteering
Last Sunday’s USA Weekend supplement to The Facts featured an article on Make a Difference Day. “For nearly two decades, on the fourth Saturday in October,” the article said, “USA Weekend’s Make a Difference Day has inspired millions worldwide to feed, clothe, house, teach and soothe their neighbors.” Friday’s funnies in The Facts featured volunteer themes in “Blondie,” “Snuffy Smith,” “Rose is Rose “and “Dilbert,” with a satiric twist, of course.

Jimenez, Thomson win Monster Dash
LAKE JACKSON — Swift on the heels of a second-place finish in the District 24-5A Cross Country meet Friday, Brazoswood High School freshman Xavier Jimenez won his second consecutive Monster Dash 5K title, and Rasco Middle School sixth-grader Lindsey Thomson finished first in the female competition by more than a minute.

Peers help motivate us to workout
Runners, cyclists, swimmers and others trying to get into an exercise regimen or to start one often fail for a lack of a support group. Their peers are not “into” exercise and sometimes even make fun of the beginner or “born-again,” aspiring athlete, particularly if he or she is average, older or mediocre, like me.

FREEPORT— The overall male and male masters (40 and older) records fell in the fourth annual Summertime Blues Sprint Triathlon, and a Lake Jackson triathlete finished first in the overall female competition.

Triathlon creates lasting memories
Deep cleaning my study/home office, I came across a multitude of old running photos I purchased or shot myself. An Aug. 30, 1986, photo brought back a specific memory from 23 years ago. I’m running in the fifth annual Brazosport Relay Triathlon.

Elderly women missing at starting line
Only four 70-plus runners finished the seven local races in 2009 — the Spectacle Spectacular 5K and 10K, the Race for the Cure 5K, the Gator Gallop 5K, the Flapjack 5K, the Firecracker 4 and the Mosquito Chase; none were female.

Figueroa sets record; Smith wins 4th Chase
CLUTE — Sesar Figueroa motored down from Baytown on Saturday, intent on beating The Great Texas Mosquito Festival 5K Chase record and buzzed the 3.1-mile Clute course in 15 minutes and 3 seconds, a sizzling 4:51-mile pace, that smashed the previous record of 16:07 by more than a minute.
