Half-century milestone attained by local couple as they celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Kenneth and Shirley (Jamison) Canion married on June 7, 1966, in Dayton, Texas. They currently reside in Columbia Lakes and reconfirmed their vows with their church family at Wild Peach Community Church, Brazoria, Texas. The ceremony was conducted by the Pastor, Reverend Dr. R.E. Breazeale.
Ken and Shirley graduated from Dayton High School in 1962. They were next door neighbors and while not dating in high school, Ken did raise several FFA scramble calves in Shirley’s back yard pasture that he rented from her dad and mom, the late J.B. and Grace Jamison of Dayton.
Shirley left DHS after graduation to attend Sam Houston State University where she earned a BS (in only three years) in Elementary Education and taught at various schools for thirty years. Ken, on the other hand, attended Texas A&M University earning a BS in Physical Education and later a Master’s Degree in Education Curriculum and Instruction. In 2012 he completed requirement for a Ph.D. of Christian Counseling from The World Outreach International Bible College, Brazoria Campus.
Ken retired, after twenty years, from the United States Air Force and the Texas Air National Guard as a Captain, and from The Texas Public School System as a high school principal; Hull Dasietta, Texas being his last school. After retirement they both went on to teach in Christian schools, the most exotic one being at Lincoln School in Las Fuentes, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, where they served two years.
Their son, Kenneth Scott and wife Serena, along with their children, Sadie, Brody and Carter from Calabasas, California, and their daughter Debora Gail with her husband, Command Sergeant Major Jerry Henderson, U.S. Army from Fayetteville, NC were also in attendance.
When commenting about the longevity of their marriage neither one claimed credit for the realization of a half century of conjugality, but gave the credit to God.
