CLUTE — A Lake Jackson man was killed when he was ejected from the SUV he was driving as it went over a guardrail and rolled once at the junction of Highway 288 and Highway 332.
John Rodriguez, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene in the 100 block of Highway 332 west, just inside the eastern Clute city limit, Clute Sgt. Phillip Hester said. He was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe west on Highway 332, at the end of the overpass at the junction of the two roads, at about 11:50 p.m. Saturday, Hester said.
“He lost control and hit the guardrail,” Hester said.
“The vehicle rolled down an embankment and he was ejected.”
The vehicle rolled once and came to rest on its wheels, Hester said.
Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Sherry Kersh pronounced Rodriguez dead. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and there were no passengers in the SUV, police said.
Clute Officer Kevin Garcia said speed might have been a factor and that a scene reconstruction indicates overcorrection as a possible cause. The crash is still under investigation, he said.
Hester said it doesn’t appear Rodriguez was wearing a seatbelt.
As with all auto fatalities, police ordered a toxicology report. The sky was clear and road dry at the time of the crash, police said.
The Highway 288 feeder road was closed for about three hours early Sunday morning, Hester said.
