LAKE JACKSON — A wall decoration with an Easter bunny, baby chickens and eggs hung perfectly Monday by the front door of a home in the 100 block of Bumelia Street. Just a few feet away, scorch marks from the fire which destroyed part of the home were visible.
Just before 8 p.m. Easter Sunday, a smoke detector alerted the home’s owners of a fire in the attached garage, Lake Jackson Fire Chief Mike Harper said. It took just six minutes after the 911 call was received for firefighters to arrive, but the garage, car and trailer inside were destroyed, he said.
The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
Fire and smoke damaged the attic and water damaged one of the bedrooms in the single-story home, Harper said. A fine film of soot covered items throughout the home.
The residents, who did not wish to be named, were able to escape unharmed. Firefighters contained the fire mostly to the garage.
Firefighters removed the brick over the garage door as a safety precaution and enlarged a window to the attic in order to remove smoldering furniture.
Twenty-three firefighters responded to the fire. No one was injured, Harper said.
