BAY CITY — A Facebook post allowed Bay City police to identify a Clute man as the suspect in a June 6 kidnapping at a Bay City gas station.

Police charged Demetrius Jaques Nelson, 38, with robbery and kidnapping Wednesday.

According to the department’s Facebook page, the kidnapping took place at a gas station in the 4600 block of Seventh Street. Bay City Detective Scott Sherrill handled the investigation.

Less than two hours after posting a video on the department’s social media network, the detective received leads that included possible identification of Nelson. As of July 1, there were more than 91,000 Facebook views and excess of 1,000 shares on the post asking for the public’s help.

Nelson was found to be wanted by Texas Department of Corrections for theft and arrested on parole violations. He was taken to the Matagorda County jail, where the kidnapping-related charges later were added.

“We feel like in this case social media helped and played an integral role in this arrest,” said Clayton Ryman, public information officer for the department. “Within two hours of making that post we had the name of the suspect. It was phenomenal how quickly it was shared.”
