Soldier home from Iraq
Published August 31, 2009
HOLIDAY LAKES — Army Specialist Michael Easterling is glad to be home to see his two children, who are the two reasons he joined the Army.
“I joined to care for my family,” Easterling said. He joined at age 22, and now as a 27-year-old he has served several stints in Germany and Iraq, he said.
He came home to visit his family before being stationed in Fort Hood in September, he said.
Though he joined to make sure his children are taken care of, he misses watching his 4-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son grow up, Easterling said.
“I’m just really proud of him,” said Jean Easterling, Michael Easterling’s mother. Though she is proud of her son for serving in the Army, she is happy to have him home.
“I just miss him,” Jean Easterling said.
Billy Easterling, Michael Easterling’s father, also was happy to have his son home for a short time.
“I like to keep kids close to home so you check up on them,” Billy Easterling said.
Easterling was surprised by a Brazoria County Cavalry ride Saturday while his family celebrated his return home.
“I was in awe,” Easterling said.
