1 vote decides Damon ISD rollback election
Published November 5, 2008
DAMON — One vote made the difference in the tax rollback election for Damon ISD, but the rollback passed by the slimmest of margins.
The provision allows an increase in property taxes from the current $1.04 per $100 of appraised property value to $1.17 per $100 valuation.
The additional school tax revenues passed with 147 votes, 50.2 percent in favor and 49.8 percent or 146 against, according to final unofficial results Tuesday night.
“The rollback election, of course, was very close,” Superintendent Donald Rhodes said. “We’re just really excited for what that means for the school, and our board will sit down and we’ll take a look at what our projected finances will be and start making some goals and some things we’d like to get accomplished for our kids.
“I’ll be going to sleep with a smile on my face,” Rhodes said.
Five candidates vied for a position on the Damon ISD school board, but only four could make it.
Incumbent Lorrin Batchelor won with 171 votes, or 19.2 percent and incumbent Angela Morris won with 202 votes or 22.7 percent. Incumbent Thomas Hoelewyn won his seat back with 211 votes, or 23.7 percent and newcomer Hugh V. Ferguson III won with 169 votes or 19 percent.
Angelia Cuellar lost the election with 139 votes, or 15.6 percent.
Sean Cameron was unopposed for the district’s lone unexpired term with 191 votes.
All results are unofficial until canvassed.
