Police: Body could be Danbury man
Published March 31, 2007
The family of a 28-year-old Danbury High School graduate is hoping murder charges will be filed against a Houston man suspected of tampering with evidence surrounding the death of their relative at the suspect’s residence.
Steven Mark Weinstein, 42, was arrested March 24 in connection with a body found in the trunk of a vehicle inside Weinstein’s garage in the 1300 block of Rosalie in Houston, according to a Houston Police Department statement.
Houston Police Department officer Gabe Ortiz said the department hasn’t positively identified the body as former Danbury resident Jerry Glaspie, but Laura Glaspie, Jerry’s sister-in-law, said the family received confirmation from police two days ago.
“It’s traumatic. No doubt in our mind he was murdered,” Laura Glaspie said. “They’re waiting on the toxicology and autopsy reports. They don’t have an actual cause of death yet.”
In February, Jerry’s family received a phone call from his friends in Houston notifying them Jerry had been missing since late January, Laura Glaspie said. Since then, the family had been working with the police department to find him, including contacting hospitals and the medical examiner’s office, she said.
“Some of his friends were calling and letting us know the various things going on,” Laura Glaspie said. “A lot of things started matching up, but they still needed to run some tests on him and do the identification.”
Friends kept in contact with the family, giving them various leads to his whereabouts, but the family didn’t have luck, Laura Glaspie said.
Police responding to a call regarding a foul odor at Weinstein’s residence discovered a decomposing body in the trunk of a car parked in Weinstein’s garage, according to the statement.
“He was a free spirit,” Laura Glaspie said. “He knew what he wanted to do. (He loved) hunting, fishing. He hung out with his friends.”
Born July 19, 1978, in Wharton, Texas, Glaspie had an associate degree from Brazosport College. Jerry was a lifelong resident of the Danbury-Houston area and a member of the First Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be Sunday and Monday in East Texas, Laura Glaspie said.
An investigation is ongoing, the statement said.
