FM 2004 head-on crash kills Lake Jackson man

Published May 6, 2008

Hospital officials listed a League City man in critical condition Monday after he sustained injuries in a car accident that left a Lake Jackson man dead.

Calvin Long, 53, died about 4 a.m. Saturday after his 1994 Chevrolet truck hit a Toyota Tundra head-on driven by Alex Schindler, 19, of League City, Department of Public Safety Trooper Manuel Cantu said. Schindler was traveling north in the wrong lane on FM 2004 a few miles from the Galveston County line when he hit Long, who was traveling south, Cantu said.

Long died at the scene while an ambulance took Schindler to John Sealy Hospital at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston to be treated for a broken leg, Trooper Louis Caltzontzint said.

Long’s body was taken to the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy, Cantu said. UTMB officials listed Schindler in critical condition Monday, hospital spokesman Raul Reyes said.

EMS officials smelled alcohol on Schindler and troopers found beer inside his vehicle, Caltzontzint said.

“He had stated to EMS personnel he had come from a party and had been drinking,” he said.

Witnesses also told troopers at the scene Schindler had been weaving all over the roadway before the accident, Caltzontzint said.

No charges have been filed as the accident still is under investigation, Cantu said. Troopers are awaiting results of a toxicology scan on Schindler, he said.

Schindler could face possible intoxicated manslaughter charges if the report shows he was legally drunk at the time of the accident, Cantu said.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident, Cantu said.
