ALVIN — A grocery store worker suffered a cut to his neck after struggling with a man he said tried to steal meat by stuffing it into his pants early Tuesday morning, Alvin police said.
Police arrested Joel Cantu, 41, of Alvin on aggravated robbery charges Tuesday after police said he cut the worker during the struggle, Sgt. Jamie Crabtree said.
The 32-year-old worker walked up to Cantu after he spotted him putting the packs of meat into his pants at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at the store in the 3100 block of S. Highway 35, Crabtree said.
“The guy started to run away,” Crabtree said. “The employee grabbed him and they both fell to the ground.”
Other store workers rushed to help and after a struggle, subdued Cantu, Crabtree said. Cantu evidently pulled the knife sometime during the struggle, Alvin police reports state.
As police took the man into custody, they noticed a small cut to the worker’s neck. He was treated by medical personnel at the scene. Crabtree said.
“We don’t know if he got the cut intentionally,” Crabtree said.
Cantu had a small bump to his head, he said.
Aggravated robbery is a first-degree felony and a conviction can carry up to a life sentence.
Cantu was at the Brazoria County Detention Center late Tuesday on $25,000 bond, according to online records.
