Columbus QB too much for Leopards
Published September 5, 2009
VAN VLECK — Columbus junior quarterback Cordrik Carter galloped for 145 yards and scored on runs of 52, 2 and 1, while also tossing the pigskin for another 132 yards and a pair of touchdowns, as the visiting Cardinals held off scrappy Van Vleck, 51-30, in a nondistrict tussle Friday night.
Carter mixed his brilliant running ability with his passing to keep the Leopards off balance all night. Teammate Chris Whitehead, who had 200 yards in last week’s opening win over Yoakum, pitched in with 97 yards on eight carries, including a 50-yard run to paydirt in the third quarter.
The 2-0 Cardinals jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a pair of Carter touchdown runs before Terrance Alliniece cracked the scoreboard for the Leopards for the first time this year with a 44-yard run in the second quarter to cut the lead to 14-6.
Carter then extended the lead with an 18-yard scoring toss to teammate Dennis Coleman to make the score 20-6 after the extra point try failed.
Alliniece came right back for the 0-2 Leopards, and scampered home from 27 yards to pull the home team within striking distance. A two-point conversion by Alliniece cut the margin to 20-14 late in the first half.
However, the Cardinals grabbed back the momentum just moments later when Hunter Plante ran back the ensuing kickoff 80 yards to give the Class 3A squad a 28-14 halftime lead.
Columbus then poured on two more touchdowns early in the third quarter before the Leopards were able to run a play from scrimmage. The Cardinals drove the second half kickoff 62 yards, then scored on a 45-yard pass from Carter to Whitehead.
Moments later, the opportunist Cardinals gobbled up a fumble on the ensuing kick. Carter took care of that two-play drive himself with a 25-yard run, then the clincher from 2 yards out. That ran the count to 42-14, which is the way the score stayed until the fourth quarter.
In the final stanza, Whitehead bulldozed his way 50 yards to make it 48-14, with the stubborn Leopards retaliating moments later on a 35-yard scoring pass from Kade Kucera to Chet Champion.
Columbus wrapped up its scoring with a 35-yard field goal with only 1:24 left in the contest. Van Vleck bounced back and used a 70-yard bomb from Kucera to Will McGonagle to set up the Leopards at the 5-yard line, where Wayne Foster scored on a sweep with only 19 seconds remaining.
Alliniece finished the night with a game-high 146 yards rushing on 13 carries. The senior had 131 of those yards in the opening half, including two touchdown runs.
Junior quarterback Kucera closed out with 117 yards passing on the night.
