Clute Harvest Fun Fest set for Thursday
Published October 26, 2009
CLUTE — Costumes, games and candy: All three ingredients for a perfect Halloween will be offered at Clute’s annual Harvest Fun Fest.
Clute’s Fun Fest will begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday with a pet costume contest, to be followed with a child costume contest and games.
“It’s a good, organized event for people to come out and enjoy the park,” said Dana Pomerenke, parks and recreation director.
The pet costume contest is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. and judges will be looking at the dogs, and also their owners, Pomerenke said. This is the first year for Clute to offer a pet costume contest, and judges will give an award to the best pet costume as well as the best pet and handler theme, she said.
The pet costume contest will be followed by the child costume contest for infants to 12-year-olds, Pomerenke said.
Some of Pomerenke’s favorite past costumes include a child dressed as a popcorn box and a boy dressed as a tin man. Mayor Calvin Shiflet remembers children dressed as a laundry basket and an outhouse, he said.
“Some of them are pretty original,” Shiflet said.
Pomerenke said the judges are looking for originality above all else. More than 100 kids usually participate, she said.
Games for kids will be open from 6 to about 8:30 p.m. Children can participate in a beanbag toss, ring toss, cookie walk and many other games, Pomerenke said.
The pet costume contest entrance fee is two pre-packaged pet food products to be donated to the Southern Brazoria County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Pomerenke said.
Children must bring two cans of food for entrance into the costume contest, and the food will be donated to The Food Pantry in Clute, she said.
Pet owners must register before 4 p.m. Thursday by going by the Clute office at 218 Highway 332 or calling 979-265-8392. Registration for the child costume contest is at the park at 6 p.m. Thursday.
