Alvin looks to go 2-0

Published October 4, 2005

ALVIN — Last season, Alvin started District 24-5A play 3-0, defeating Brazoswood, Clear Creek and Clear Lake along the way.

This time around, Alvin enters today’s game against Clear Creek with a 1-0 record in 24-5A after defeating the Bucs 21-7 on Thursday.

Clear Creek has lost 20 straight games, a streak dating to the 2003 season.

The Wildcats have started the 2005 campaign 0-4 after dropping a 39-28 decision to Deer Park on Sept. 15.

Clear Creek has not played since then because of a bye week and the evacuation for Hurricane Rita.

“I told the team we need to throw all that out the window because this is a district game,” Alvin coach Mike Bass said. “These guys coming in here (today) are eager for a district win and want to get their coach his first win.

“I’ve never been involved in a Tuesday game in varsity, but I tell the kids that Monday through Friday we get to play. Some people along the Gulf Coast, unfortunately, will not have that opportunity, so we have to be ready on Tuesday.”

The Yellowjackets (2-3, 1-0) have mixed in the run with the pass well this season as quarterback J.B. Brown leads the district in passing with more than 500 yards. One of his primary targets is Chris Nowlin, who leads the district in receptions with 14. Coupled with the running of Cody Osbon, the Yellowjacket offense is keeping opposing defenses on its heels.

“You know, offensively I thought we were able to control the line of scrimmage against Brazoswood so we need to continue that against Creek,” Bass said. “By controlling the line of scrimmage it helped our passing game, so hopefully we can do that again on Tuesday night.”

Osbon also has eight catches to rank high on the team. With more than 300 yards in total offense against the Bucs on Thursday, Bass feels like the offense is making its move at the right time.

“I feel like the offense is catching up with the defense and at the right time, too,” Bass said.

Alvin’s defense, which has been at the forefront since the season, began allowed only 62 yards on the ground against Brazoswood.

The Wildcats only average 200 yards in total offense, totaling 838 yards in four games. In the five games played so far, the Yellowjacket defense has allowed only Texas City to rush for more than 100 yards.

Clear Creek quarterback Neal Warden has thrown for 366 yards in the first four games. Austin Yancy (10 catches, 152 yards), Jereme Brooks (9-137) and Taylor Echols (8-77) have been Warden’s go-to receivers. Avery Burton is the Wildcats’ top ground gainer so far with 168 yards on 40 carries.

“What worries me most about them is that they have a lot of team speed,” Bass said. “One thing our defense cannot do is give up third and eight plays like we did against Brazoswood. The defense will have to control the line of scrimmage so we can nullify the speed they have.”

With the Yellowjackets playing on four days of rest, Bass tried to keep the work week as similar as possible.

“We took the approach that made it seem like we were on a regular work week,” Bass said. “For instance, the Friday practice we made it seem like a Monday practice. The Saturday practice was like a Tuesday practice. Today, we combined a Wednesday and Thursday practice to get ready for game day.”

After today’s matchup with Clear Creek, the Yellowjackets won’t play again until Oct. 13 against Clear Lake.
