Provide children with proper places to learn

I have a background in education which includes teaching and supervising grades eight to 12 in addition to university experience with both undergraduate and graduate levels. From my past experience I recognize good environments are conducive to better learning and behavior.

Teachers cannot motivate and students cannot concentrate if outlets do not work, roofs leak, buildings are falling apart, classrooms are overcrowded, and decent and adequate numbers of restrooms are not available. It is difficult for teachers and students to perform under such conditions. Some of our schools simply are worn out.

Gyms are multipurpose facilities and are used for many multicultural functions. Physical education is essential to the physical and mental development of today’s physically inactive children. A district-wide natatorium is an important part of any school’s physical education program. Fine arts facilities also will help shape the children. These additions to our district will help build character.

The most precious possession you have is your child. Provide them with a proper place to learn, grow and develop. Get involved and be there for your child. Vote yes for the Brazosport ISD bond issue.

Supporting bond keeps community strong

I am very pleased to give my whole-hearted support for the 2009 Alvin ISD bond election.

Living in the United States is a true privilege, and we need to do what we can to keep our country strong and competitive. By supporting our local educational system we are helping to provide a well educated workforce that is necessary for our country to compete in this global economy.

Also, many of our students will serve us in the future as competent technicians, business leaders, ministers, educators, physicians and other professions. For example, currently three of our local veterinarians and many of our educators and military personnel are graduates of the Alvin ISD. We appreciate the quality education that these servants have received.

Please join us Tuesday in supporting the 2009 Alvin ISD bond election or during early voting, which ends today.

Dr. Cornell DeWitt, Alvin

We should invest in our future with BISD

I am fortunate enough to have had four children successfully complete their grade school education in Brazosport ISD. They received an excellent education that prepared them for productive lives in this community.

I believe BISD invested in the futures of my children and in all the children who have received their education here. Now is the time when we, as residents and benefactors of BISD, can invest in the future of high quality education and in high quality facilities with current technology. The school board bond election offers voters an opportunity to make this investment.

As a resident of this community, I hope to see continued economic growth and expansion here. In order to achieve this, I believe we need to have an educated community that is competitive with neighboring communities, not only in quality of education and technology but in facilities that will stand the test of time. Some of the schools in BISD have served us well for 40-plus years. Now is the time to move on into the future and replace and upgrade.

I’m in support of the proposed bond issue and strongly urge everyone concerned about the future of this community to support it.

Raising taxes with bond will hurt area industry

It is inconceivable the Brazosport ISD board would call for a bond issue in the middle of a recession when the largest taxpayers are struggling to make a profit. Example: Dow Chemical Company has lost $1.49 a share over the last 12 months. Punishing businesses during a recession will likely cause people to lose their jobs. Bringing up the fact that homeowners will only be assessed small amounts is relevant, but more relevant is the fact businesses pay 70 to 80 percent of all property taxes in BISD.

Dow’s board chairman, Andrew Liveris, spoke at the Chamber of Commerce annual meeting a couple of years ago, and at that time he reported chemicals would continue being made in the United States. But he also added that if they are to remain being made here, it is up to this community. He made the point that if you punish Dow with higher costs of doing business, they will be made somewhere else. This bond issue will raise their cost of doing business — at the wrong time.

It’s time to replace those in power

Seems like the last two weeks there’s been a different school in the paper every day wanting $10 million to $50 million for a bond issue. The only way this is going to end is if everybody gets out and votes every incumbent out.

The state wants to tax your property now. The only way to tax fairly is through a sales tax. Everybody pays. No exceptions no exemptions. I’m tired of renting from the county. Don’t pay your rent and see what happens to you.

Next is this hidden tax. The speeding tickets. When a county cop goes down a mile turns around and comes back she’s working that road. When there’s a drop to 45 mph on the road, it’s just revenue — generating. There’s only two driveways on the road.

Vote no to the judge that doesn’t tell the cop to leave a working man alone. When they went from being peace officers to law enforcement that’s when it went bad. The very name just oozes with polished gestapo boot in the neck going to make you do right.
