Updates for Nov. 28, 2009

Published November 28, 2009

OIL SPILL CLEANUP ONGOING

Crews are almost finished cleaning an oil spill on the San Bernard River at Tara Petroleum Inc.’s property that happened on Nov. 21, said Jeff Mink, Brazoria County environmental crimes investigator.

Absorbent pads still are being used to soak up the remainder of the 100 barrels spilled on the property, and an estimated 10 barrels, or 420 gallons, that leaked into the river after some rainfall.

The oil spread about 300 yards downriver from the original site, 2 miles south of the Churchill bridge at FM 2611.

Despite the spill, no fishing advisories have been issued for the area, Mink said.

PAJAMA DRIVE COLLECTS 215 PAIRS OF PAJAMAS

Thanks to generous donations from area residents, a Lake Jackson woman was able to donate several pairs of pajamas to the Brazoria County Youth Home and a Houston orphanage, Brandi Khan said.

Khan started gathering pajamas in early fall and was finally able to donate them, as well as $250, she said.

She was moved to collect pajamas after hearing about orphans who had to sleep in their clothes because they didn’t have pajamas.

TEXAS GENERAL LAND OFFICE TO COME DOWN DEC. 7

Texas General Land Office officials are set to assess Surfside Beach’s erosion issues and discuss an action plan with residents Dec. 7, but a meeting location and time have not yet been determined, land office spokesman Jim Suydam said.

Erosion from recent cold fronts and storms in the Gulf of Mexico has caused the island community’s pedestrian beach to lose feet of sand and helped take down two homes on the public beach.

“We’ll talk about what the land office will do immediately, and to get local input on what the long-term fix should be, and how to get there,” Suydam said.

More information will be announced when the land office secures a meeting venue, Suydam said.

TOY DRIVE HELPS 2 CENTERS

Angleton Danbury Medical Center’s “Week of Caring” toy drive netted eight boxes of toys, enough to share with the Children’s Advocacy Center and the St. Thomas Center, hospital spokeswoman Tonya Visor said.

Items given to the St. Thomas Center will be distributed to the homeless population in Angleton ISD, Visor said.

“I was so pleasantly surprised by the gifts,” Visor said. Along with toys, the hospital collected 7,000 pounds of food for area food banks, and “hundreds” of coats and blankets, she said.

The events were part of the hospital’s 40th anniversary celebration.

CHRISTMAS AROUND THE SQUARE A SUCCESS

As many eager shoppers milled around stores during Bay City’s Christmas Around the Square last week, business owners call the event a success.

“It went really well, I think,” said Ken Head, a member of the Downtown Merchants Association.

The event began with a lighting ceremony for the Christmas tree in the square, and all the Christmas lights on the courthouse were lighted.

Entertainment and refreshments in various stores also drew in the crowds as everyone got a jump start on their Christmas shopping, Head said.
