OPPERUD MOVED TO HOSPICE
Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Officer Rick Opperud has been moved to a Hospice center in Houston after an aneurysm rupture and subsequent surgery during the last two weeks.
Opperud suffered “several small strokes” after the rupture Nov. 4 while training drug dogs in Louisiana, Sheriff Charles Wagner said. He was brought back to Houston for surgery and to be closer to family members, Wagner said. He was removed from life support Thursday then placed in hospice.
Opperud has been with the sheriff’s office since March 1992. He’s worked in the jail, in patrol and moved to narcotics in 1996.
He’s a certified trainer for the National Narcotic Detector Dog Association and serves on its board of directors.
60,000 POUNDS OF E-WASTE REMOVED FROM COUNTY
More than 60,000 pounds of electronic waste was collected during Saturday’s countywide drive, said Keep Brazoria County Beautiful President Jamae Bowman.
By the end of the year, Bowman predicts the county will have collected about a quarter-million pounds of televisions, computers and microwaves, she said.
The county also collected about 1,400 tires, which means millions of mosquitoes will not have a chance to be hatched in the water that can collected in discarded tires, Bowman said.
DOW CHEMICAL DONE WITH PIPELINE REPAIR
Dow Chemical Co. has finished repairs on the pipeline that started leaking a urethane product in October, resulting in the evacuation of residents in 65 homes in northernmost Freeport.
Dow has received permission from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to fill the area surrounding the pipeline with dirt, which should be done this week, spokeswoman Beth Dombrowa said.
“We have to put the site back into pre-event conditions,” Dombrowa said.
Evacuated residents were OK’d to return to their homes Nov. 5 after officials determined no health risks were associated with the leak.
Dow paid for displaced residents’ hotel accommodations, food and other needs during the evacuation.
SURFSIDE SURVEILLANCE FOOTAGE SHIPPED OFF
Surfside Beach police’s investigation into a suspicious object found stuffed a cigarette canister on the Village Hall front porch has been delayed after officers were unable to view the surveillance footage.
The digital video recording device froze when offices attemped to review footage of the porch, where a phone transducer and wiring were found in the canister Monday by a municipal employee, Police Chief Randy Smith said. The discovery resulted in the closing of Village Hall for about three hours Monday.
The hard drive will be sent off to a technology company in Houston, where it will be put into a new digital video recording unit for viewing, Smith said. It is expected to be back late this week.
