District officials squeezing in games

Published September 27, 2005

Hurricane Rita not only made a mess of portions of the Texas Gulf Coast over the weekend, but also scrambled the area’s football and volleyball schedules.

Week 4 of the football schedule — set for last Friday and Saturday — was wiped out by the threat from Rita and the majority of games are either going to be canceled or made up near the end of the season.

District 24-4A representatives met early Monday and decided to leave the next month of the schedule untouched, meaning Angleton and Brazosport will meet Friday night at Hopper Field, as originally scheduled.

Friday night was supposed to be Brazosport’s homecoming, but Brazosport ISD athletics director Fred Bolton said homecoming has been moved to Oct. 14, when the Exporters host Foster.

The Brazosport-Terry and Angleton-Foster games that were set for last Friday will be made up at the end of the season. Bolton said there’s a possibility that 24-4A schools will play three games during the final two weeks of the season, but nothing has been finalized.

“The districts have a choice of whether they want to make up the schedule in front or at the end of the season,” Bolton said. “24-4A decided to make it up at the end of the season.”

District 24-5A teams Brazoswood and Alvin, on the other hand, will make up their missed games sooner if decisions made in a meeting Monday are approved by the district’s executive board.

The Bucs and the Yellowjackets, originally scheduled to meet last Friday, will play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Hopper Field.

On Tuesday, Brazoswood will face Clear Lake at 7 p.m. in Pearland and Creek will play at Alvin at 7 p.m. Those games were scheduled to be played this Friday night.

Brazoswood then will host Clear Brook on Saturday, Oct. 8, in a 2 p.m. start. Alvin has a bye that weekend.

Following Monday’s preliminary meeting, Bolton said 24-5A will finalize its plans Wednesday morning when the district’s executive board meets to approve the changes.

Alvin head football coach Mike Bass said players and coaches will have to adjust to the changes and work through them without the usual downtime allotted in a normal schedule.

“That’s the challenge for the kids, as well as the coaches,” Bass said. “The traditional ways to prepare for a game will have to be thrown out the window.”

Since the county’s Class 3A and Class 2A football programs missed non-district games Friday, those games will not be made up. Columbia was scheduled to play at Barbers Hill and Sweeny at Sealy.

Danbury — which has a bye this week — would like to schedule a game Friday, but will not reschedule last week’s contest against Evadale, athletics director Jay Janczak said.

As of Monday, Janczak said he hadn’t found an opponent for the weekend.

“Right now, there are things a lot more important than football,” Janczak said. “Once we get things back in line, then we’ll start to worry about football.”

Volleyball is in a different boat than football, Bolton said, as University Interscholastic League rules state that canceled games must be played at the earliest possible date.

“Volleyball teams are not limited to the number of games they can play in a week,” he said. “The Friday games will go on as scheduled and we will know more about the makeup games (today). They will be made up soon.”

Alvin athletics director Sandra Howell said, pending approval, decisions have been made on when District 24-5A volleyball games will be made up.

Last Friday’s games will be played Saturday and tonight’s scheduled games will be made up Monday, Howell said. This Friday’s slate will go on as scheduled.

Danbury has postponed its home match against Brazos scheduled for tonight to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Bolton said sports such as cross country, golf and water polo will resume regular schedules, but will not make up missed contests.

One volleyball game will go on as scheduled tonight.

Columbia and Sweeny will meet at 7 p.m. in West Columbia in a District 25-3A match.
