’Jackets fighting to finish
Published November 5, 2009
ALVIN — The 2009 high school football season hasn’t gone the way the Alvin Yellowjackets wanted, but the team has a chance to end with a winning streak and build toward a successful campaign next year.
Fresh off a 33-16 win over Clear Creek, Alvin (1-5 district, 2-7 overall) is gearing up for its second District 25-4A victory in a 7 p.m. showdown today against the Clear Brook Wolverines (2-4, 3-6) at Veterans Memorial Stadium in League City.
“It’s a big game for us,” Alvin coach Jeff Dungen said. “Everybody feels better after a win. I told the kids, ‘You play to make the playoffs and get one more game. Now we have one more game and nobody can take that away.’
“We’re playing this one like our playoff game and to show everybody what we’ve got.”
The Yellowjackets have been in some close district games but have struggled to pull out wins.
Alvin was within seven points against Dickinson with 6:52 to play in the game before losing by 14, and led Galveston Ball before a field goal with seven seconds remaining gave the Tors a one-point victory.
“There’s no doubt we’ve been competitive and have been close,” Dungen said. “We just hadn’t seem to be able to come through in some close games. In this district, on any given night any team can beat anybody. It all came together last week for us and we’re trying to do that again against Brook.”
Alvin was able to limit Clear Creek’s passing offense to only 291 and 16 points in the win. The Yellowjackets scored first set up by a Clear Creek fumble and rolled to a 33-3 lead in the fourth quarter.
Matthew Bass and Bryce Jackson each ran for more than 110 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
“We did a good job limiting our mistakes, capitalizing on theirs and keeping their offense off the field,” Dungen said. “Brook is a totally different offense, but they score almost every time they get the ball. We have to keep their offense on the sidelines and hold onto the ball when we have it.”
Cleat Brook’s triple-option attack has totaled 2,742 yards on the ground and the team averages 350.8 yards of offense a game. Wolverine fullback Brandon Ellison has gained 1,074 yards on 142 carries with a district-high 16 touchdowns and 100 points. He is averaging 7.56 yards an attempt.
Jackson has run for 548 yards and five scores on the year. Alvin quarterback Dustin Moehlig has 673 yards on the ground with four touchdowns and has thrown for 1,178 yards with seven scores and eight interceptions. Joe Ramirez tops the Yellowjackets with 31 catches for 530 yards and four touchdowns.
“We need to take Brook out of their comfort level and put them in some long-yardage situations,” Dungen said. “We have to play good up front against that option. The game will be won right there between the guards and defensive tackles.
“If we get whipped there, they win. If we can whip them, we win.”
