Brazos River could flood
Published October 29, 2009
ROSHARON — Heavy rain projected to hit Southeast Texas starting today could lead to some flooding along the Brazos River in the bottoms near Rosharon.
The Brazos River was reported to be at about 31.8 feet near Rosharon on Wednesday afternoon and that is not expected to change much through today, said Josh Lichter, meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
But several thunderstorms projected to develop by Friday could drop 1 to 3 inches of rain in some areas around the Brazos River, raising streams that feed into it, Lichter said.
“We don’t know for sure,” he said. “But residents are definitely advised to keep their eye on the weather for the next two or three days.”
Flood stage for the Brazos River at Rosharon is about 43 feet, Lichter said.
So far, Brazoria County emergency management officials don’t expect the flood to affect residential areas, though it could affect livestock.
“We’re just going to monitor the river for now,” said Steve Rosa, the county’s deputy emergency management coordinator.
