Former Alvin High student dies at camp

A former Alvin High School student who died after a hike at a wilderness camp was buried this week, a local school district official said.
Funeral services for Matthew Meyers of Manvel were Tuesday, said Alvin ISD Superintendent Greg Smith.
“We’re certainly saddened by the loss of the ninth-grade student,” Smith said.
“I think he was doing well in school. He was involved in the band program. We didn’t have any discipline problems with him at Alvin High School.”
The boy’s parents withdrew him from Alvin High last Thursday, Smith said.
The boy was attending the Lone Star Expeditions School, a therapeutic wilderness program near Apple Springs in East Texas, when he died Friday.
“We are deeply saddened to report that a young male enrolled in our program passed away on Friday, Sept. 17,” said Scott Spaw, the school’s executive director. The group arrived in camp at about 5 p.m.
“Following a routine one-mile hike, the young man expressed feelings of being faint and soon lost consciousness,” Spaw said. “CPR was immediately administered by trained staff and an EMT.”
LifeFlight was called as emergency medical personnel continued to work on the boy, who was then taken to Woodland Heights Hospital.
He was pronounced dead at 6:45 p.m., Spaw said. He said the school shares the family’s grief and offers its support.
An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death, Spaw said.
