District 24-4A revises schedule
Published September 30, 2005
Friday night football games are a way of life in Texas. Mother Nature plays by her own rules, however.
Because of last week’s mandatory evacuation to get out of the path of Hurricane Rita, District 24-4A teams will take to the fields Wednesday, Monday and Saturday to play their final three contests.
The district, which includes Facts coverage area schools Angleton, Brazosport and Bay City, will start its three games in 10 days plan Oct. 26.
After its home game against Terry on Friday, Oct. 21, Angleton will host Bay City on Oct. 26 and travel to Lamar Consolidated for an afternoon contest Oct. 31. The Wildcats finish district play Nov. 5 against Foster, the team they were supposed to play a week ago during the evacuation.
Brazosport plays at Bay City Oct. 21 and then travels to Calhoun for a game Oct. 26. Five days later, the Exporters host El Campo on Oct. 31. Brazosport’s final district game will be at 8 p.m. at Terry on Nov. 5.
Bay City now hosts Calhoun on Oct. 31 and plays at Lamar Consolidated on Nov. 5.
“We had actually thought about playing this scenario this week, but Brazosport was not yet in session (Wednesday) so it would not have been fair for them to get back into school on Wednesday and then play a game,” District 24-4A Executive Committee Chairman Hal Roberts said. “All of the principals and coaches met on that Tuesday before the evacuation and we looked at these two plans. And because of the five-day rule that the UIL has on football games, it was something we all agreed on. ”
The University Interscholastic League has since waved the requirement, allowing districts to come up with what works best to get the games in before the first weekend of postseason games, which can begin on Thursday, Nov. 10. Practicing on Sundays will not be allowed.
District 24-5A, which includes Brazoswood, Alvin and Pearland, has already begun the process of making up games. Alvin and Brazoswood met Thursday night, and Pearland played Clear Brook. The next night of District 24-5A games will be Tuesday, and the teams will then play Oct. 8.
Normally it takes seven days for coaches to prepare for an opponent.
“This will be uncomfortable for everybody ... but if we start focusing on the negative of it, I believe it is not the right way to look at it,” Angleton coach Joshua Potter said. “We are trying to look at it in a positive way and overcome it. We will think about it in those terms when the time comes.”
Brazosport head coach Garth Darby said that while no coach really wants to play three games in 10 days, there was no other option.
“There was no way out of a bad situation, so we just have to band together and compete,” Darby said. “This is going to be a problem for everybody with just three days of preparation, but we have to do it.”
