Manvel freshmen drop close game

The Manvel freshmen lost 18-13 to La Marque in their first home game of the season.

Manvel took a 13-12 lead in the fourth quarter only to see the Cougars drive for the winning score.

Manvel will close out the year against Angleton.

MANVEL JV DOMINATES: The Manvel junior varsity team blanked La Marque on Thursday, 26-0, in Manvel for its third straight win.

Trenard Taplin, Ted Gonzalez, Jonathan Wilcoxson, and Corey Seymour scored touchdowns for Manvel. Dillon Worthy added a two-point conversion.

Defensively, C.J. Hobsoni, Idris Abdulaleem, Oscar Favian, and Matthew Strawn led the way to the shutout.

Manvel will finish the year Thursday at Angleton.

’NECKS FRESHMEN ROLL: The Columbia freshman blanked Wharton’s junior varsity and freshman combined team by a 20-0 count Thursday at Griggs Field.

Floyd Bess scored twice for the Roughnecks on runs of 35 and 10 yards. Willis Johnson added a 5-yard touchdown run, and Greg Gomez and Daniel Hunt each kicked an extra point.

Joe Craig had a sack and intercepted a pass for Columbia. Teammate Justin Hussey forced two fumbles. Ryan Griggs, Caleb Johnson, Carter Barrios and Zack Henson each had a tackle for a loss.

Columbia will host Stafford on Thursday.

CLUTE FALLS: Both Clute Intermediate seventh-grade football teams took losses Thursday against Alvin.

The White team fell, 15-13. Mario Salinas scored both touchdowns and added an extra point for the Cougars. The first score came on a 14-yard run behind the blocking of Avery Lewis, Devon Wallace, Bailey Clifton, James Ash, Noe Medrano and Robert Lara.

The second touchdown was a pass from Landon Cooper to Salinas for 70 yards.

The defense was led by Jaise Jenison, Justin Baltazar, Dustin Black and Robert Espinoza.

The Blue team (6-1) suffered their first loss of the year to the Mustangs, 24-18.

Shelton Rhodes and Antonio Flores scored for Clute. Offensive linemen Tre’ Williams, Juan Navarro, Justin Pena, Marcos Narvaez, Sergio Valenzuela, Alex Martinez, Jose Hernandez and Phillip Herrera created openings for both runners. Gerry Guel and Michael Traylor had solid games on the offensive side of the ball.

The defense was led by Ridge Barnett, Israel Rodriguez, Dustin Lacaze, Chazz Simms and Aaron Slaughter. Chase Winthrop and Flores each had an interception.

VOLLEYBALL

Manvel ousted in playoffs

The Manvel Lady Mavericks dropped a 25-10, 25-20, 25-18 decision to Foster in the Class 4A Region III bi-district round on Tuesday at Wheeler Field House in Sugar Land.

“We came out and I thought they played their hearts out,” Manvel head coach Raheanna Stahl Arnold said. “I couldn’t have asked them to do much more. They came out and had a David and Goliath match and they did the best they could.”

Foster (20-9) showed its strength with junior Taylor Whileyman from the outside along with sophomore Erin Fairs in the middle. Both came up with some big shots in the first game that set the tone right away.

Manvel (18-17) just couldn’t get anything going against the more powerful Lady Falcons.

“We knew we were going to have to serve tough and hoped we could force some passing errors on them,” Stahl said. “We wanted to keep their offense off balance, and we did that at times but it wasn’t enough.”
