Columbia comeback comes up short
Published September 5, 2009
WEST COLUMBIA — Time ran out on the Columbia Roughnecks as a comeback attempt fell short in a 36-22 loss to the St. Pius Panthers on Friday night at Griggs Field.
“We had too many miscues in the first half,” Columbia coach Leland Surovik said. “We weren’t running what we were supposed to run. In the second half, we came out and decided to play our brand of football. We just ran out of time.”
The Roughnecks (0-1) were within seven points with just more than 8 minutes left when Chaz Easton recovered an onside kick to give them the ball at the Panther 44. But an interception by St. Pius’ Matthew Barajas at the Panther 22 ended the threat.
Just after that, Columbia recovered a Panther fumble at the Roughneck 48. The ‘Necks got as far at the Panther 36 before turning the ball over on downs.
Panther running back Bradley Ward ended Columbia’s hopes with a 53-yard touchdown run with 35 seconds left in the game to end Columbia’s hopes.
Columbia made the rally after mustering only 15 yards of offense in the first half.
The Roughnecks fell behind 7-0 after St. Pius quarterback Brent Peavy capped a 44-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run with 9:07 left in the first half.
The drive came after St. Pius recovered an onside kick to start the game.
Columbia’s Gray Raley set up the Roughnecks’ first score when he intercepted a Peavy pass and returned it to the Panther 14.
A few plays later, Sean Flannel scored the first of his two touchdowns in the game with 3:22 left to help tie the game, 7-7.
Peavy got the lead back for St. Pius with a 21-yard touchdown run with 11:50 left in the second quarter.
Later in the quarter, Peavy kicked a perfect punt that was downed at the Columbia 1. A fumble on the first play of the Columbia possession resulted in a
St. Pius touchdown as Josef Slaney recovered the loose ball in the end zone with 6:32 left in the first half. A two-point conversion gave St. Pius a 22-7 lead at the half.
In the second half, Columbia got on the scoreboard first when Flannel scored his second touchdown of the game on a 13-yard run. Logan Hernandez ran in the two-point conversion to get the Roughnecks with seven with 2:31 left in the third quarter.
