Drought making road fixes necessary

HOW IT WORKS

Glad You Asked features questions from Facts readers. Facts staff members pose those questions to newsmakers who provide the answers.

QUESTION: Who is responsible for fixing the roads in the west end of the county? CR 809 has been deteriorating for about a year now. The county came out and threw some rock and oil in some spots, but this only made the problem worse. On CR 799, there is a crater in the road I hit yesterday and blew out the two passenger-side tires on my car. Isn’t the county supposed to keep these roads in good condition?

ANSWER: In response to complaints and work orders on CR 809 for road repairs: We have several spots on this road that have base failures and drop-offs due to the dry weather. We did some spot patches a few weeks ago with a Gradall crew. Tuesday of (last) week our road set-up crew started mixing and resetting the base on the bad sections. We were to finish the base work last week and put a two-course surface treatment on these sections Monday. If you have any questions, give me a call.

Jason McCaffety,

Road and Bridge foreman, West Service Center

ANSWER: CR 799 is planned to be reconstructed in 2010 as one of our Annual Road Plan projects by our West Service Center (Clute). The road is in bad condition, but has been patched where failed and is safe to travel at posted speed limits.

Because of the lack of rain, the shoulders have been shrinking and roads cracking all over the county, where trees are in the fence line and there are deep ditches. We will continue to monitor the roads and make any repairs necessary to make them safe.

Keeping them smooth will be a challenge in some cases until they get in the road plan and are reconstructed.

Gerald Roberts,

Brazoria County engineer
