Sweeny tipped off play in the Brazos Tournament on Thursday and walked off the court with a 52-48 win over Edna.

The Bulldogs (3-2) trailed after the first two quarters but pulled away in the second half. Junior Dane Hooker led the Sweeny with 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals. John Williams had 11 points, six rebounds and three assists for the Bulldogs, Terrell Bedford scored 11 points, with nine rebounds and Trey Lemon popped in eight points and had four steals.

Sweeny plays today at 7 p.m. against the winner of Thursday’s late game between Brookshire Royal and Foster junior varsity.

COLUMBIA FALLS: The Roughnecks had an opportunity to beat Halletsville but fell short 60-59 in the team’s opener at the Industrial Tournament on Thursday.

Down by nine points entering the final period, Columbia outscored Halletsville 19-11 but fell a point short in its comeback.

“We were behind most of the game but Brian Grable hit a couple of threes in that fourth quarter and got us back in it,” Columbia coach John Vernor said. “We had a chance to win but missed the shot at the end.”

Chad Ledbetter led the Roughnecks with 19 points. Adrian Baldridge scored 12 points, Matt Taylor had 11 and Grable netted nine.

Columbia (1-3) will play at 3:30 p.m. today versus Port Aransas.

ANGLETON LOSES: The Angleton Wildcats ran into a buzz saw Thursday at the Katy Classic losing the opener to the Mavericks.

The Wildcats fell behind 26-11 in the first period but kept pace with Morton Ranch in the second quarter till the Mavericks turned it on again in the third period. Kevin Foster connected on eight treys and finished with 29 points to lead Morton Ranch.

Bubba Grant led the Wildcats with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Garrett Brown tossed in 15 points for Angleton, Colton Kemp had 11 and Jacob Velasquez finished with 10 points.

Angleton (3-2) will play at 4 p.m. today at Cinco Ranch against the loser of Thursday’s late game between Houston Kashmere and Mayde Creek.

LADY JACKETS DROP TWO: The Alvin Lady Yellowjackets opened the Terry Lady Ranger Classic with consecutive losses.

Alvin dropped a 44-37 decision to Foster and then fell 48-24 to Fort Bend Elkins.

The Ladyjackets were outscored by Foster 13-8 in the final period. Brittany Reed and Deanna McChesney led Alvin with 11 points each.

Elkins outscored Alvin 22-8 in the first period and didn’t allow the Ladyjackets to climb back in. McChesney led Alvin (0-10) with eight points.

LADY OILERS SPLIT: The Lady Oilers defeated Klein 41-34 in their opener at the Lady Ranger Classic on Thursday but dropped the afternoon game to Lamar Consolidated, 53-46.

Pearland (5-5) never trailed against Klein as Julia Bennett scored 22 for the Lady Oilers.

Against Lamar Consolidated, Pearland opened with a 14-3 first quarter lead but was outscored 25-11 in the second period and went into the locker room trailing, 28-26. Lamar held a 34-33 edge heading into the final eight minutes and outscored Pearland 19-14 in the final period.

Julia Bennett had 11 points to lead the Lady Oilers.
