Dawson goes deep at 7-on-7 tourney
Published July 12, 2009
The Pearland Dawson Eagles went to College Station to get a taste of the 7-on-7 State Championships and played to an impressive performance.
After advancing past pool play Friday into the 32-team Division I championship bracket Saturday, the Eagles faced off against Abilene to open the playoffs at Texas A&M University.
After trailing 20-19 at halftime, Dawson came back to beat Abilene, 32-26.
“It was a fight all the way through,” Dawson 7-on-7 coach Ryan Silvertooth said. “Darrin (Lazard) had an outstanding game throwing the ball and Marcus Vaughn and Randall Lee both had a lot of catches.”
Vaughn caught three touchdown passes. Lazard will be going into his senior season with the Eagles, while Vaughn and Lee will be juniors.
A total of 16 teams got past the opening round — Dawson, Guyer, Wylie, DeSoto, Stoney Point, Mission, Birdville, Jersey Village, Lake Travis, Langham Creek, Coppell, The Woodlands, Arlington Bowie, Cy-Fairbanks, Arlington and Arlington Bowie.
Dawson played DeSoto in the second round and fell behind 30-12 at halftime. The Eagle defense limited DeSoto to only seven points in the second, and Dawson mounted a comeback but fell short, 37-32
“They were just quick. They have a couple of guys going to Texas and they were just so talented,” Silvertooth said. “Offensively, we had some tipped-ball interceptions in the first half, and in the second half we just executed.
“For the most part, we just hurt ourselves in the first half. In the end, we just ran out of time against them.”
On Friday, Dawson went 2-1 in Pool H to advance to the championship round. It was Dawson’s first time at the 7-on-7 state tournament.
“They gained a lot of experience going up against some big-time programs,” Silvertooth said. “Any time you qualify for a state tournament like this, it only means more games to play and your players playing together.”
Stoney Point went on to win the 7-on-7 Division I state championship by defeating Cy-Fair, 33-31.
The Pearland oilers went 1-2 in Pool E play and fell into the consolation bracket on Saturday. The Oilers reached that bracket’s finals and dropped a 52-27 decision to Houston Stratford at Kyle Field. The Oilers trailed Stratford, 26-21, at the half.
In bracket play, Pearland had wins against Hays Consolidated, 33-31, Cedar Hill, 33-26, Richland, 46-20, and Houston Lamar, 39-26.
