County eyes Highway 36 work
Published October 26, 2009
ANGLETON — Brazoria County commissioners could continue paving the way for $29.4 million in improvements to Highway 36 when they meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the county courthouse in Angleton.
Projects approved by the Texas Transportation Commission last month include segments of Highway 36 in West Columbia, Brazoria and at Port Freeport. The work will be part of a “pass-through” agreement. Pass-through projects are funded by a local entity with the state reimbursing a negotiated percentage of the cost.
On the table will be the widening of Highway 36 to four lanes from the West Columbia city limits north to near CR 467. That portion of the project also calls for a Highway 36 overpass at the new Highway 35.
In Brazoria, 5.2 miles of Highway 36 would be widened to four lanes from the city limits to West Brazos Junior High School.
At Port Freeport, parts of FM 1495 and Highway 36 would be elevated to create a raised highway intersection to keep port traffic at the ground level and regular traffic on the new level, Port Director A.J. “Pete” Reixach has said.
Also Tuesday, commissioners could consider approval of fines for use or possession of glass containers on beaches in unincorporated areas of the county. Rules prohibiting glass containers are in place but currently there are no fines for violators, said Jim Wiginton, Brazoria County District Attorney civil division chief.
“For whatever reason, no punishment was set,” Wiginton said. “You can’t have glass containers or any glass products on the beach.”
Fines being considered are $50 to $100 for a first offense, $100 to $200 for a second offense and $500 and up to 60 days in jail for a third offense, he said. It will be up to Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office deputies to enforce the law and justices of the peace to assess fines.
Other items for commissioners to consider Tuesday include a beachfront construction permit in the 12900 block of Jolly Roger in Treasure Island; an interlocal agreement with Danbury ISD to help surface parking lots behind the transportation center on Third Street and lots behind the high school and fieldhouse on Panther Drive; repair a wooden bridge over Chocolate Bayou off CR 168 in Precinct 3; and applying for a catastrophic planning grant.
