Foundation seeks submissions for quilt show

Published January 16, 2009

Local residents will have the chance to win a raffle quilt or receive a prize for their own quilt at the Brazoria Heritage Foundation’s second annual “Airing of the Quilts” quilt show Jan. 24-25 at the Museum and Conference Center, at W. Smith and Highway 36 in Brazoria. Visitors can view quilts from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Jan. 24 and 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Jan. 25. The show originally was scheduled for last September but was postponed because of Hurricane Ike. Admission is $5.

Show organizer Shirley Spearow is looking for quilts from Brazoria and the surrounding area to use in the show. Quilts could vary from old quilts grandmothers have made to keep their families warm, heirloom quilts made by ancestors, the new quilts made today and all those in between. Made either out of necessity or from a love of color and fabric, each is a work of art.

A book on the quilts of Brazoria County will be written. Quilts in the show will be photographed and documented after they are hung for inclusion in the book.

“I may know that the quilt was made by great grandmother coming across the country by covered wagon, but my grandchildren won’t,” Spearow said. “Our museum motto is preserving the past for the future. We need to document these stories so they aren’t lost to future generations.”

Viewers will vote for their favorite quilt. The votes will be counted at 2 p.m. Jan. 25 and the winner will receive a special “Viewer’s Choice” award.

Also, tickets will be sold for two different raffle quilts. Spearow made one of the raffle quilts, a mostly green quilt having a kaleidoscope star pattern. The drawing for the quilt will be at 3 p.m. Jan. 25. Proceeds from the attendance fee and raffle ticket sales for this quilt will go to the Brazoria Heritage Foundation to help pay for future community activities and building expenses.

Bring quilts to the gym at the museum and conference center 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. Jan. 23. Quilts can be picked up from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 25. If you cannot bring the quilts, call Spearow at (979) 798-9130 or (979) 236-1154 before Jan. 23 and arrangements can be made for them to be picked up and returned.
