Laura-Sue Jeannette Womack weds Kevin Wayne Karl

In a beautiful evening ceremony on June 6, 2009, Laura-Sue Jeannette Womack and Kevin Wayne Karl were united in holy matrimony before 400 family and friends as witnesses. The ceremony took place at the First Baptist Church of Brazoria at half past five in the evening. Nathan Burrow, minister of the Sweeny Church of Christ, performed the double-ring ceremony.

For her wedding, Laura-Sue chose a stunning Piccione gown fashioned of diamond white silk satin. The bodice featured a sweetheart neckline adorned with Swarovski crystal embellishment and a fitted drop waist. The A-line skirt flowed into a beautiful chapel-length train that was also embellished with Swarovski crystals. A chapel-length veil embellished with a Swarovski crystal trim complemented her gown. The bride carried a bouquet of red roses accented by Swarovski crystals. The bride was escorted by her father, Bill Womack, and when asked who gives her away her father replied “her mother and I and all who love her.” A string quartet of violins provided the music for the ceremony.

Laura-Sue was attended by her maid of honor, Briana Garza, her lifelong friend; matron of honor, Liz Swan, sister of the bride; Katrina Otto and Krystle Karl, sisters of the groom; Chelsea Gotcher, cousin of the bride; and Lacie Kilsby and Lori Beth Brooks, friends of the bride. The junior bridesmaids were cousin of the bride, Brinley Hardwick, and cousin of the groom, Charity Karl. The bridesmaids wore black satin strapless side-ruched ball gowns with a rhinestone brooch, and carried bouquets of red roses. Flower babies were friend of the bride Bo McKenzie Wright and niece of the groom, Kaedyn Otto, who wore matching ivory tea-length dresses accented by red sashes and each carried a basket of white rose petals. They all wore matching rhinestone necklace and earring sets which were their gifts from the bride.

The groom wore his Navy dinner dress blues adorned with medals awarded to him for National Defense honors and expert pistol marksmanship. The groom’s attendants were best man, Sean Connors, friend of the groom; Jacob Norsworthy, friend of the groom; Randy Womack, brother of the bride; Brad Mallory and Doug Jones, friends of the groom; John Shelander, cousin of the groom; and Brent Otto, brother-in-law of the groom. The junior groomsmen were Aaron Karl, cousin of the groom, and Spencer Swan, nephew of the bride. Ring bearers were Graham Swan and Shepherd Swan, nephews of the bride. The groomsmen and ring bearers wore a classic notch, full-dress black tuxedo with red rose boutonnieres. The groom and groomsmen were treated to a straight edge shave and haircut at Roosters in Pearland the morning of the wedding by the groom’s father, Gary Karl.

The bride was also attended by senior bridesmaids Vera Brooks, Jo Ann Eargle, Beverly Wells and Dianne Westmoreland, friends of the bride; and honorary attendants Mary Ann Cummings, cousin of the bride, and Naomi Smith, friend of the bride. Scripture readers were Mary Ann Cummings and Lynn Bates, childhood dance teacher and lifelong friend of the bride. The senior bridesmaids wore long black skirts and matching red and gold paisley tops. All carried black bibles engraved with their names and a gold rose given as gifts from the bride and groom. The wedding vows, specially written by Nathan Burrows, were based on 1st Corinthians which is a favorite of both Laura-Sue and Kevin.

The bride, in keeping with tradition, had a 1947 nickel in her bouquet, which is her father’s year of birth, her paternal grandmother’s prayer book which is seventy-five years old, and six-pence in her shoe given by her parents for her something(s) old. She wore diamond stud earrings, a wedding day gift from her father and a silver ankle bracelet, a wedding day gift from her brother as her something(s) new. She wore her maternal great-grandmother’s original wedding band, which was purchased in 1934, for her something borrowed. She wore a camouflaged garter with a navy emblem and blue bow given to her by her maternal grandmother as her something blue.

The couple was honored with several showers and parties in the months preceding their wedding and Laura-Sue and Kevin thank all the hosts and hostesses and everyone who attended from the bottom of their heart.

The bride and bridesmaids were honored at a luncheon held at Roses and the River which was hosted by the bride’s maternal grandmother, Sue Carr.

The rehearsal dinner, hosted by the groom’s parents, was Texas style Bar-B-Q at Scott’s Bar-B-Q and Catering in West Columbia.

The reception, hosted by the bride’s parents, was held at the Cherotel in Lake Jackson, where a dinner and dance were held. After dinner, the bride and groom were honored with a toast. A highlight of the wedding was a six-tiered white wedding cake and chocolate groom’s cake which was adorned with a hand-made Navy emblem. The bride and groom had a candy toss for the children at the reception followed by the bouquet and garter toss. At the center of an ice cream bar was a four-tiered Blue Bell-themed wedding cake, which was a surprise for the groom. Blue Bell ice cream would accompany Laura-Sue on her frequent trips to visit Kevin while he was stationed in Sicily.

The house party attendants were Paula Brooks, Sheryl Ducroz, Shelbey Hardwick, Shari Karl, Sally Lynch, Amber Neal, Sharon O’Brien, Heather Rickaway, Susie Salyer, Tiffany Thames, Pat Thomas, Karen Thomas, Meredith Wright and Allison White. Church coordinators were Shelia Williams and Paula Brooks.

The happy couple spent the week following their nuptials at the Sandals resort in the Bahamas followed by a week in San Diego, California. After a short deployment, the couple will be making their home in Sasebo, Japan, for the duration of Kevin’s enlistment.
