Bark in the Park caters to 4-legged residents
Published October 30, 2009
LAKE JACKSON — Instead of a “boo” on Halloween, pet lovers expect to hear some barks.
The Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals of Brazoria County is hosting its first Bark in the Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Dunbar Park in Lake Jackson.
“It’s a family-friendly event,” said Michele Allison, outreach and volunteer coordinator for the SPCA. “We encourage people to get out with their pets and walk their dogs.”
The event will include an SPCA shelter pet reunion and a pet blessing ceremony at 10 a.m., she said. A pet costume contest will take place at noon with an entry fee of a bag of dog food or cat food, she said. Prizes will be awarded for best costume, pet and owner lookalike, most beauty-challenged and best trick.
Pet health information booths about microchips and spay or neutering will be staffed by local veterinarians, Allison said. Pet photographs will be available and anyone can come out and adopt a pet, she said.
Pet products also will be for sale, said event coordinator Stacey Suazo. Everyone is asked to bring their pet on a leash or in a crate, she said.
SPCA hopes to make Bark in the Park an annual event, Allison said.
