Save your Christmas trees for our beaches

Published November 3, 2009

Howdy! Can you believe this beautiful weather? The ground actually still is a little moist, most of the cracks have swelled closed and the pond is almost full. Now it’s time to start thinking about Christmas!

EARLY CHRISTMAS LIST: Early Christmas List: I can hear it now, “I know Tillman doesn’t Christmas shop till Christmas Eve.” You got that part right. Actually, I would like for you to start thinking about what you are going to do with your Christmas tree after the holidays. Dunes Day is Jan. 23 and we hope to collect 21,000 Christmas trees.

This year is especially important because a lot of the major recovery from Hurricane Ike as far as construction has been completed, but our sand dunes still are non-existent. Christmas trees that were placed on the beach in January have done a lot and started new sand dunes, but this year we hope to place a line of trees from San Luis Pass to the Brazos River. They are perfect for catching wind-blown sand and starting new dunes.

In order to do this, several groups already have begun to work. Bob Eastman with the Surfside Save Our Beach Association and several high school student council groups are looking at what they can do to help. Commissioner Donald “Dude” Payne and the rest of Commissioners Court are helping with hauling the trees and drop-off locations.

STUDENTS TO HELP: The High School District Student Councils will meet Nov. 14 at Brazoswood High School and plan to move to the beach to work on Hurricane Ike recovery. Hopefully, they will be able to help our effort to collect trees from the greater Houston area.

Twenty-one thousand trees is a lot, but with a little planning, we might be able to accomplish this lofty goal. We are requesting assistance with hauling trees from Houston and unloading them at Surfside Beach.

On our wish list this year is that residents deliver their Christmas trees to one of the county maintenance barns. If your city picks the trees up, there is a very good chance they also will be hauled to the beach. However, if you live in the country, the county maintenance barns will have drop-off locations.

HELP NEEDED: If you have a truck and trailer and can haul Christmas trees, or if you would like to help rent a truck through a donation, please contact our office.

Now it’s time to take a youngster fishing and find out what is on their Christmas list. A lot of good talking goes on during a fishing trip and you will create some great memories.
