Pearland (7-1, 4-0) at Galveston Ball (5-3, 2-2)
7 p.m., Friday at Kermit Courville Stadium
Last week: Pearland beat Alvin, 48-7; Ball lost to Brazoswood, 21-14
Last year: Pearland won, 41-14
Overview: The Oilers have already clinched a playoff berth and can assure themselves at least a share of the District 24-5A title with a win over the Tors. Pearland takes an offense that is averaging 325.1 yards a game and the top-ranked defense (171.8 yards) into Ball territory. Sophomore Kasey Carrier leads the ground game with 1,082 yards and 11 scores. Junior quarterback Sam Allen has shown signs of sprouting with 838 passing yards on 66 completions and seven touchdowns.
Ball will counter with Eddie Brown (104 carries, 653 yards) and Richard Sincere (43-for-87 passing, 532 yards) through the air. Andre Patino has also contributed under center with 511 yards on 30 completions.
Clear Creek (3-5, 2-2) at Alvin (0-9, 0-5)
7 p.m., Friday at Memorial Stadium
Last week: Pearland beat Alvin, 48-7; Clear Creek was open
Last year: Clear Creek won, 39-8
Overview: This will be the Yellowjackets’ last opportunity at a win in 2007. Creek still is hoping to cling on to one of the four playoff spots. Creek, Ball High and Clear Brook all are at 2-2 in district and Clear Lake is 2-3.
Alvin is averaging 258.9 yards of offense a game but ranks last in district in defense, allowing 390.9 yards per contest. The Yellowjackets will go up against the top passer in District 24-5A in Neal Warden (124-for-223, 1,275 yards, five touchdowns). Alvin’s Stephen Owens ranks second (95-for-173, 991 yards, three touchdowns).
Texas City (6-2, 4-0) at Angleton (2-6, 1-3)
7 p.m., Friday at Wildcat Stadium
Last week: Angleton lost to Friendswood, 41- 13; Texas City beat Brazosport, 22-21
Last year: Texas City won, 45-19
Overview: Playing for pride, the Wildcats can play spoiler the remainder of the season. Beating the only undefeated team in district could be a nice consolation for Angelton. Angleton has been outscored 109-54 in district and averages 200.3 yards a game.
The Stingarees bring in the top rusher in district in Johnny Thomas (1,319 yards on 196 carries). Thomas has added 16 touchdowns for an offense averaging 299.4 yards a game.
The Wildcats have fumbled the ball 22 times, losing 12 of them, while Texas City has 13, losing nine.
Bay City (4-4, 1-2) at Terry (3-5, 1-2)
7:30 p.m., Friday at Traylor Stadium
Last week: Bay City beat Katy Seven Lakes, 43-28; Lamar Consolidated beat Terry, 25-22
Last year: Terry won, 45-0
Overview: Both of these teams are in need of a win or will be home during the postseason. Anthony Brown leads the Rangers on the ground (55 carries, 444 yards, four touchdowns) and in receptions (12 catches, 254 yards, two touchdowns). Another threat is the dual quarterbacking of Zach Nowak (39 completions, 477 yards) and Ray Cervenka (18 completions, 316 yards).
Bay City quarterback Shaun Rutherford (183 completions, 2,175 yards) leads the Blackcats, and with two games remaining, could surpass 2,500 yards. Rutherford has thrown for 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Darian Dale (47 catches, 642 yards) and Kory Ford (27 catches, 367 yards) are Rutherford’s top targets.
