Letters for Oct. 26, 2009

Amazing Grace and football

Friday night lights, cheerleaders, bands, pep squads, football players, fans and a prayer spoken over the PA system by a student of the high school. These are sweet memories of my high school days.

Friday night, Oct. 16, Danbury High School and Hitchcock High School played a football game in Hitchcock. All of the above elements were there that I had enjoyed in high school, except for the prayer.

When the announcer at the game asked everyone to stop for a moment of silence, there was silence everywhere. Then, the most beautiful sound came from the stands — the Hitchcock band began playing “Amazing Grace” while everyone was silent. No prayer was spoken out loud, but that song says it all.

A heartfelt thank-you to Hitchcock High School for such a powerful message.

Don’t fall for their lies

I feel I should explain what I’m saying when I say I know more than most of you out there. It’s not ego. I can’t physically do much, so I can spend more time reading than most of you.

I probably spend more on subscriptions than professionals. Some of these, few, if any, get. This is how I get information weeks or months before it makes the media.

This is why I tell you the worst is yet to come. Don’t fall for their lies, false statistics or “recovery” of stocks. It’s all a mirage to sucker us to follow them. This is why I tell you to vote no on all bond issues. They could well end up driving governments and us to bankruptcy. When the bottom falls, we won’t be able to repay.

There are definitely needs, but we must find other ways to meet them. Volunteer labor could help some and we will certainly have free time. Think back and tell me which time my forecast failed to happen.

It seems we’re no closer to victory

On Oct. 17, Pakistan launched a major offensive against 10,000 Taliban forces with about 28,000 troops. That is a little less than a 3-to-1 advantage.

I would like to know why our military leaders cannot get their job done with a far greater advantage, and whine for more troops? This sounds like leadership has a total desire to continue a flawed strategy.

Eight and half years after Sept. 11 we still seem no closer to victory than ever.

David Payne, Brazoria
