Cuero gobbles up Bay City

Published September 19, 2009

BAY CITY — The Bay City Blackcat offense couldn’t get going Friday against Cuero on homecoming night.

The Gobblers, ranked No. 8 in the latest Associated Press Class 3A Texas high school football poll, were spotted a quick 16-point lead and moved the ball up and down the field all game en route to a lopsided 38-10 win.

Cuero sophomore running back Trent Jackson ran 21 times for 228 yards and three touchdowns. The Gobblers totaled 458 yards and 22 first downs, Bay City (0-4) had 113 yards of offense and only four first downs.

“We’re still not producing the way I want us to,” said Bay City head coach Robert Blackmon. “Cuero did a good job moving the ball and keeping their defense off the field. I have to tip my hat to them.”

The Gobblers (4-0) scored the game’s first points on a safety after a high snap on a punt during the Blackcats’ opening drive. The Gobblers went up 9-0 after a 73-yard drive capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Tyler Arndt to junior Aaron Bell.

Arndt finished the game 13-for-18 passing for 170 yards and also caught a 15-yard touchdown pass.

An interception ended the Blackcats’ next drive after only three plays and set the Gobblers up at the Bay City 30. Two plays later, Jackson ran it in from 21 yards out, and the extra point put the Gobblers ahead 16-0 with 4:16 to play in the first quarter.

If it wasn’t for the play of the Blackcats’ special teams, Bay City would have been shut out.

Senior Ja’Len Sidney put Bay City on the scoreboard with an 85-yard kickoff return with 3:59 to play in the opening quarter. He picked the ball off the turf after a pair of teammates collided trying to field the kickoff and went the distance down the left sideline. Senior kicker Taylor Brown added the extra point and brought the Blackcats within nine points, 16-7.

A 54-yard punt return by senior Anthony Deleon put the Blackcats at the Cuero 36-yard line with 2:58 to play in the half to set up Bay City’s only other score.

On the drive, Bay City converted its only first down of the half on a 7-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Derek Brown to senior Tavoris Southall-Mack on fourth down and three. Four plays later, barefoot kicker Taylor Brown split the uprights with a 39-yard field goal with 1:10 left in the half to make it a 23-10 Cuero lead.

“Our special teams play was a positive for us,” Blackmon said. “We needed a spark, and those guys came through and made some things happen for us.”

Bay City moved the ball on its first possession of the second half with a 31-yard run by junior Jeramy Williams and a 16-yard run by Sidney. But the scoring chance — the Blackcats’ only offensive threat of the game — ended on a Cuero interception in the end zone on a fade pass from the 9-yard line.

The Gobblers added points in the second half on another safety of a high punt snap and a 53-yard touchdown run by Jackson.

Bay City next plays Friday at Sweeny.
