Sweeny student picked for New York City event

Published October 28, 2009

Chelsea Williams, 17, a senior at Sweeny High School, was selected to participate July 12-21 in the LeadAmerica Congressional Student Leadership Conference for Medicine and Health Care at Columbia University.

The selection process was based on her academic record, leadership potential and interest in the field of medicine. The 10-day program engages students in art of discovery, experimentation and helps them gain knowledge in the health care field.

Students have the opportunity to an acquire an understanding of the health care profession, collaborate with others in caring for patients, recognize the importance of communication and observational skills, obtain an accurate medical history of a patient to formulate a diagnosis through an examination and laboratory testing, and gain exposure to ethical and legal issues facing health care.

Williams plans to pursue a career as a neonatologist or an anesthesiologist.

While in New York, Williams toured the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center and the site of the World Trade Center, and shopped on Madison Avenue.

Williams is a member of the National Honor Society at Sweeny High School. She is the daughter of Joyce Williams of Brazoria and George Williams of Kennard, the granddaughter of Arqueller Johnson and Jerry Johnson of Brazoria, Venta Williams of Trinity and the late Earl Cooper, and the relative of extended family members George and Jean Sanders of Lake Jackson.
