Area roundup: Angleton falls to La Marque

BOYS BASKETBALL

Cougars down Angleton

Jimmy Wooten scored a team-high 17 points as La Marque beat visiting Angleton 67-63 on Tuesday in District 23-4A play.

The Wildcats trailed 17-2 in the first quarter but roared back into the game. Angleton was down 65-63 with 10 seconds to play and got a steal, but an errant shot missed and the Cougars (17-9 overall, 6-2 district) drained a pair of foul shots for the final difference.

Garrett Brown scored a season-high 32 points for the Wildcats (19-8, 6-2) and had five assists. Christian Spears added 12 points.

Angleton plays at home on Friday against Brazosport. The teams are in a three-way tie for second place in district with La Marque.

SWEENY STAYS PERFECT: Dane Hooker poured in 21 points with three baskets from behind the 3-point arc as Sweeny stayed perfect in District 24-3A play with its 56-48 win over Royal in Brookshire on Tuesday.

Hooker also had six rebounds and four assists.

Tre Lemon chipped in with 12 points and six assists for the Bulldogs (22-4, 8-0) and Terrell Bedford eight points, 10 rebounds and three steals.

Sweeny plays again Friday at Stafford.

BUCS WIN: Luke Harralson scored 17 points as Brazoswood earned its first District 24-5A victory on Tuesday with a 58-55 win over Alvin.

Drew Sellers had 15 points for the Bucs (7-19, 1-5). J.K. Laws added 12 points and Skyler Sikes had eight points and 11 rebounds for Brazoswood.

Willie Davis scored 21 points for Alvin.

MAVS EDGE STINGS: Manvel pulled out a 61-59 victory over Texas City in District 23-4A action Friday night.

With 52 seconds on the clock and down by a point, 56-55, Manvel’s Kory Munson nailed a 3-pointer. A couple of free throws by Robert Love increased the Mavs’ lead to 60-56 with 24 seconds remaining. The Stings nailed a trey of their own to pull within a point, 60-59.

But Brenson Lair hit one of two free throws with nine ticks left to give the Mavericks the victory. Manvel’s full court press forced Texas City into 26 turnovers.

Lair and Munson both had 11 points. Jhyleon Session scored nine and JJ Jordan finished with eight.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Columbia ekes past Sealy

Laura Whitehead scored 32 points as the Lady ’Necks slipped past Sealy in District 24-3A play on Tuesday 56-55.

Natalie Rodrigues added 10 points for Columbia (20-6, 7-3) and Kiara Bonner added seven points.

The Lady ’Necks play Wharton at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Columbia.

SWEENY FALLS: Jessica Jammer had 20 points for Royal (21-4, 7-3) as the Lady Bulldogs downed Sweeny 45-36 on Tuesday in District 24-3A play.

Ashley Bonner led Sweeny (15-9, 5-5) with 25 points, 12 rebounds, six steals and two blocks. Marlana Flores added 10 rebounds and Dorie Thompson dished out seven assists.

Sweeny hosts Stafford at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

DANBURY DOWNED: Jo Janis netted 23 points to lead Brazos past Danbury 59-41 in District 27-2A play on Tuesday.

Bianca Chambless scored a game-high 30 points for the Lady Panthers (9-18, 4-6). Bailey Vrazel added eight points, four steals and three assists and Ashley Noak had three points and six rebounds.

Danbury plays at 6 p.m. Friday against YES Prep in Houston.

LADY BUC FRESHMEN WIN: The Lady Buc freshmen team kept its unbeaten streak alive with a 55-36 win over Clear Creek on Friday.

Brittany Walker led Brazoswood (21-0, 9-0) with 17 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Trisha Amboree had 16 points, six assists and five rebounds.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lady Bucs Blank La Porte

Akua Sencherey scored twice Tuesday and assisted on another goal as the Lady Bucs blanked La Porte 5-0.

Sara Fish added a pair of goals for Brazoswood ( 6-4) and Jenni Cole netted a score. Ashley Glennie and Ashleigh Thomson both had an assist. Keeper Allison Adam recorded the shutout.

The Lady Bucs play Victoria Memorial at 6 p.m. Friday at Slade Field.

BOYS SOCCER

Angleton thumps

Texas City

The Wildcats scored three goals over a five-minute span in the first half to break a 1-1 tie en route to their 6-1 win over Texas City on Tuesday in District 23-4A play at Wildcat Stadium.

Alex Martinez had two goals and an assist and Pablo Ordonez and Nick Rice and each had a goal and an assist for Angleton (3-2, 2-0). Pedro Leal and Keith Rice each added a goal for the Wildcats.

Angleton plays at 7 p.m. Friday at Dickinson.

BUCS TIE: Zack May, Josh Cantrell and Juan Gonzalez each scored one goal as the Bucs played Deer Park to a 3-3 tie at Slade Field on Tuesday.

Garrett Ghant, Nick Sanchez and Christian Martinez all had one assist for Brazoswood (2-1-2). Deer Park knotted the game on a goal with 2:35 to play.

The Bucs open play in the Kingwood Tournament on Thursday.

ALVIN WINS SHOOTOUT: The Alvin Yellowjackets won the Alvin ISD Shootout Saturday with a 2-1 win over Pasadena Memorial in an overtime in a shootout.

Alvin did not allow a goal in the tournament and reached the final with a 1-0 win over Northbrook earlier in the day.

Alvin also had wins over Dickinson, 5-1 and Manvel junior varsity, 6-0.
