Angleton defense shuts down Brazoswood

Published September 5, 2009

ANGLETON — The Angleton Wildcats’ offense was its usual lethal self Friday against rival Brazoswood. But on this night, however, it was the Wildcats’ defense that took center stage.

Angleton used some solid tackling and tough play at the line of scrimmage to limit Brazoswood to only one second-quarter touchdown en route to a 27-7 victory at the new Wildcat Stadium.

In sum, Angleton’s defense allowed only 168 yards of total offense, with a majority of those yards coming while the Wildcats were nursing a 20-point second-half lead.

“With how fast and smart our defense plays, these guys have the hearts of lions,” Angleton head coach Finis Vanover said. “It’s incredible how fast they play and how much they play together.

“The biggest thing we’ve conquered is that animosity stuff,” Vanover said. “There’s no jealousy or selfishness. They just love playing together. They love subbing in and subbing out and playing fast-break football. It’s rotate in and rotate out, keeping fresh legs and keeping coming after them.”

Angleton (2-0) allowed Brazoswood (1-1) only 63 yards and two first downs in the opening half, which proved to be a crucial juncture of the contest. The Wildcats crossed the end zone three times in the second quarter and stretched out to a 27-7 halftime advantage.

Neither team scored in the second half.

“They’re a good football team and their team speed is wonderful,” Brazoswood head coach Dean DeAtley said. “I don’t think we did some things we needed to and we hurt ourselves a little bit in some situations, but we’re going to learn from this and we’re going to get better.”

Angleton used all of its offensive weapons to snare the big first-half lead.

Be it behind the legs of quarterback Quandre Diggs and running backs Henry Josey, Terrance Franks and Donnie Foster or the receiving of Darion Nelson, the Wildcats were difficult to stop in the first and second quarters.

Angleton started the game with an eight-play touchdown drive, capped by a 9-yard Josey touchdown run. The teams alternated possessions for the rest of the first quarter.

Then the Wildcats began to hit stride.

Diggs hit Nelson on a 12-yard scoring pass early in the second quarter to complete a 14-play, 59-yard drive, and after Shaun Rodriguez’s extra-point conversion, the Wildcats had a 14-0 advantage.

On the Bucs’ next possession, quarterback Chase Matzke found a wide-open Marqualle Davis for a 37-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead in half. The scoring play accounted for more than half of Brazoswood’s total first-half offense.

The Wildcats came right back with another solid drive — this one going for eight plays and 62 yards — to increase their lead to 21-7. Foster scored on a 3-yard run.

It looked as if this would be the score going into the half, but an errant Brazoswood snap with less than a minute remaining in the half resulted in an fumble recovery by Angleton’s Jeremy Hebert on the Bucs’ 10-yard line.

Two plays later, Diggs snuck the ball in from the 1 to up the score to 27-7.

“We can’t hide it and I won’t apologize for it,” Vanover said of Angleton’s many offensive weapons. “God has blessed this town with some incredibly gifted athletes. They’ve had it for decades, but couldn’t find a way to make it work. It’s the chemistry, the caring of each other and the selflessness that’s making the difference with this bunch.”

Brazoswood had its opportunities in the second half with two drives deep into Angleton territory.

In the third quarter, the Bucs used a 42-yard run from Davis, helped along with some assistance from Wildcat penalties on other plays, to move down to Angleton’s 22-yard line. An interception by James Winn ended the Bucs’ scoring threat.

Brazoswood again advanced to Angleton’s 22-yard line in the final stanza, but the Wildcat defense stood strong, forcing the Bucs to give up the ball on downs.

“There are some positives to take out of this game, and some things to work on,” DeAtley said. “It was 27-7 at halftime and we held our own in the second half.

“We had some opportunities, but we didn’t execute. You have to tip your hat to Angleton because they’re a very good football team. But we’ll be OK.”

Diggs paced Angleton’s offense with 94 yards on 15 carries. He also completed six of 12 passes for 60 yards. Josey added 48 rushing yards, while Franks tallied 36. Nelson pulled in three passes for 37 yards.

Angleton’s offense finished with 289 yards of total offense.

Davis led Brazoswood’s rushing attack with 48 yards, while Ricky Lunford contributed with 29 yards.

Matzke completed five of 11 passes for 72 yards with one interception. Davis and Julian King had one catch each for 37 and 30 yards, respectively.
