Mutiple pets seized from Lake Jackson home

Published March 9, 2008

LAKE JACKSON — Several malnourished dogs and cats confiscated from a Lake Jackson home look to be doing better while their owners have been arrested on cruelty to animals and drug charges.

Lake Jackson police were called Feb. 29 to a home in the 300 block of Dogwood Street and found a strong smell of animal urine and feces, Lake Jackson Police Lt. Rick Park said.

They found seven pit bull-mix dogs — a mother and six puppies — and three cats at the home covered in their own filth and without food and water, he said.

“The condition of the house was extremely dirty,” Park said.

The windows to the home were left open, and the animals were entering and exiting through them when police arrived, he said. Police found animal feces inside the house, which previously had been condemned by the city, Park said.

“They (also) found a prescription bottle that contained 27 tablets that were later identified as 20 Lamictal, two Vicodin and five Lexapro,” he said.

Lamictal is used to treat bipolar patients and epilepsy, Vicodin is a painkiller and Lexapro is an anti-depressant.

Neither of the two women who lived in the home, a mother, 40, and her 17-year-old daughter, had prescription for the drugs, he said. They each were charged with a misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals and three counts of possession of dangerous drugs, Park said.

The animals are being cared for by the Brazoria County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The cats eventually could be adopted depending on their condition, officials said.

But the dogs cannot be adopted because they are pit bull-mix and must be sent to a special facility, said Christian Ramsey, executive director of the Brazoria County SPCA.

“The puppies and mother are doing well,” he said. “You could see her ribs and spine” when the mother was picked up.

The dogs were examined by a veterinarian and so far they are recovering, Ramsey said.
