2 school districts improve ratings

Published August 2, 2006

The Columbia-Brazoria and Pearland school districts joined Danbury ISD as recognized districts when the Texas Education Agency released 2006 accountability ratings Tuesday.

All other Brazoria County districts remained academically acceptable.

“We’re just thrilled,” said Carol Bertholf, Columbia-Brazoria ISD’s superintendent. “Our teachers (and) our campus administrators are just awesome and I think it tells the community and everybody around that we’re doing the right thing and we’re focusing on the students.”

Danbury High School’s rating dropped to acceptable this year, but Danbury Elementary School rose to recognized, keeping Danbury ISD overall a recognized district.

“It’s a wonderful achievement for the district — and then to maintain that, we’re real pleased with that,” Superintendent Eric Grimmett said.

The accountability ratings are based on passing rates on the state’s Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills in English language arts/reading, writing, math, social studies and science, the State-Developed Alternative Assessment II for special education students, high school completion rates and dropout rates in grades seven and eight.

The threshold for being named an acceptable campus or district increased this year, but the standards for recognized and exemplary were the same as last year, according to a TEA press release.

Brazoria County’s increase in recognized districts mirrors a state trend. According to TEA, 330 districts are recognized this year, up from 172 last year.

Grimmett said he thinks Brazoria residents should be proud to have three recognized districts this year.

“We have good schools here led by strong educators, so I think the residents of our county are fortunate,” he said.

Among individual campuses, Columbia-Brazoria ISD’s Wild Peach Elementary regained the “exemplary” status it received in 2004.

“They’re ecstatic,” Bertholf said. “They’ve been an exemplary school in the past and they wanted to get back to that rating and they worked hard to do that.”

The accountability ratings don’t show the true extent of the improvement in Angleton schools, Superintendent Heath Burns said. Although every regular campus except the high school is considered either recognized or exemplary, Burns said the district has appealed two of the ratings.

Coding errors on special education tests kept Northside and Westside elementary schools from being named exemplary schools Tuesday, he said.

“They were not performance issues and we have every reason to believe the accountability ratings will be corrected,” Burns said.

He said the testing contractor already has reviewed the tests at issue and agrees with the district about the errors. He said he expects the Texas Education Agency to rule by October, making all the district’s elementary schools exemplary.

Burns attributed Angleton schools’ strong showing to a “renewed focus on the TAKS objectives.”

“We had comprehensive tutorial programs and did a wonderful job of identifying the needs of specific students and teaching to those particular deficiencies,” he said.

In Brazosport ISD, O.A. Fleming Elementary School improved from acceptable to recognized, but three other schools dropped. O.M. Roberts, formerly an exemplary school, is now recognized. Velasco and Gladys Polk elementary schools, which were recognized last year, now are considered academically acceptable.

Superintendent Rudy Okruhlik could not be reached for comment. Spokesman Stuart Dornburg said he couldn’t speak to the ratings changes.

“We’re trying to get school going again, so we have not had a chance to look at anything that was released today,” he said.

In Alvin ISD, one elementary school’s rating was lowered, but Alvin Junior High and four elementary schools’ status improved. That includes Mary Burks Marek Elementary, which now is considered exemplary. Alvin ISD Superintendent Greg Smith could not be reached for comment.

Damon and Sweeny schools remained academically acceptable.
