Angleton pilot OK after crash in field
Published October 4, 2009
JONES CREEK — A pilot walked away unscathed after a Brazoria County Mosquito Control plane crashed into a grassy field Saturday morning.
The pilot, Michael Jones, 49, of Angleton was flying near the Clemens Unit at the intersection of Highway 36 and FM 2004 at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday when he clipped a radio tower and attempted to make an emergency landing in the field, said Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Josh Strawn.
The plane struck two cows in the field, killing them, Strawn said. It also struck a woodpile, Strawn said.
Jones was able to shut the plane’s valves off so there were no hazardous chemicals leaking from the plane, Brazoria County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Varon Snelgrove said.
Bud Thompson, a Lake Jackson doctor, was driving by the field when he saw the plane crash. Thompson quickly stopped the car and ran to help the pilot, he said.
“He had no scratches,” Thompson said.
Lee Ward, a rancher who was leasing the field, came to check on his cattle soon after the crash and saw the pilot walking around, he said.
Both were amazed the pilot was fine.
The plane, a Beechcraft E18S, sustained significant damage in the crash, Snelgrove said. After the Federal Aviation Administration investigates the crash, the plane’s wreckage will be hauled from the field, he said.
