B’wood orchestra benefit concert coming up

CLUTE — The Brazoswood High School Orchestra will present its annual benefit concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at The Center for the Arts and Sciences’ large auditorium, 400 College Blvd.

The concert will be followed by a reception. Admission is $8 for adults and $4 for students. Proceeds fund Brazoswood Orchestra Association scholarships.

Musical works will include Haydn’s “Cello Concerto in D,” John Williams’ “Schindler’s List” (arranged by Calvin Custer) and Handel’s “Harp Concerto in B flat.”

The Brazoswood Orchestra is conducted by Darren Tidwell and will feature five seniors as soloists: Drew Cryer, Amy Freeman, Martha Krebsbach, Lauren Puckett and David Sprinkle.

Harpist Cryer is a member of the Brazoswood Orchestra and Buc Band. Her achievements include three years at TMEA State Orchestra, Houston Youth Symphony and an upcoming second summer at Tanglewood Music Center. Her harp studies began with Margaret Norman six years ago. She will be majoring in harp performance in the fall and planning to attend Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.

Freeman is a cellist and pianist. Besides her years with Brazoswood Orchestra and Brazosport Symphony Orchestra, she has been a part of region orchestras and state UIL solo/ensemble. She currently studies cello with Patrick Moore and has studied piano for 13 years under Katie Hunt. Amy will have her senior piano recital at 5 p.m. May 17 at Chapelwood Methodist Church. She plans to attend Baylor University.

Krebsbach is a member of Brazoswood Orchestra and Brazosport Symphony. She also has been in the orchestra pit for many Center Stages productions and member of region orchestras and state UIL solo/ensemble. She studies violin with Carey Lewis and piano with Jean Chang. She will be majoring in metallurgical engineering at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

Puckett is a harpist who has studied under Margaret Norman since sixth grade. Her resume includes Brazoswood Orchestra, Brazosport Symphony, Houston Youth Symphony, region orchestra and state UIL solo/ensemble. She was one of the performers featured in this year’s Klassical Kids concert. She will attend Texas A&M University and major in biology and biochemistry in pursuit of a career in medicine.

Sprinkle is a member the Buc Band and Brazoswood full orchestra. He studies flute under Audry Dunn and has achieved numerous UIL distinctions. He also has been a member of Brazosport Symphony and performed with Center Stages. An avid composer, he will major in music at University of North Texas.
