County seeking photos for Ring of Honor
Published November 25, 2009
ANGLETON — Brazoria County Veterans Services officials are looking for photographs of any Brazoria County veteran who served in any conflict, and those photos could become part of the soon-to-be-built Ring of Honor.
“We’re looking for pictures of veterans who've served in all the different conflicts we’ve had in the United States,” Veterans Services Director John Jerabeck told commissioners Tuesday. “We’re wanting pictures of servicemen from each branch of the service.”
One picture from each branch of the service will be etched onto six granite blocks, which are part of the monument planned for the Brazoria County Courthouse lawn.
Veterans Services spokesman J.W. Rhyne said they’re seeking photos with soldiers in combat or in combat poses. The rest of the photos likely will be used in a keepsake book and given to the Brazoria County Historical Museum.
The granite blocks are to be placed in the 50-foot diameter pavilion. It will include three flags, 11 floor panels, a granite inner circle with a granite star, six monuments and statues of Medal of Honor winner Clarence Sasser and a “Gold Star” mother.
Six monuments will be for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. Names of Brazoria County vets killed in service will be inscribed on the memorials. A black stone centerpiece will include two letters: One from Abraham Lincoln comforting a mother on the loss of her son, and the other from Brazoria County fallen veteran Christopher McCrackin.
A gun, helmet and boots will stand beside the granite block in which the letters will be etched. It will be entitled, “An American Soldier … The Cost of Freedom.”
So far, $265,000 has been raised toward the $615,000 total cost.
Fundraising efforts are ongoing and now include the sale of cooked, frozen briskets, hams and cobblers, Jerabeck said.
“You can order everything you need for Christmas gifts,” he said.
Call the veterans office at 979-864-1289 for further information on the ring of honor, and on the holiday fundraiser.
Recent voluntary fitness challenges at the county have netted some money, and that will be given for the Ring of Honor as well, said Arthur Velasquez. executive assistant to County Judge Joe King.
Jerabeck said all money for the monument is coming from local sources, and he asked residents to visit the county’s Web site at www.
brazoria-county.com and click on the Veterans Services link for more information.
“This is a Brazoria County effort,” he said. “What a great county, and what a great commitment.”
Also Tuesday, commissioners:
AGREED: To standardize all Brazoria County business cards as white with black ink and a Brazoria County emblem. Pct. 4 Commissioner Mary Ruth Rhodenbaugh asked if that applied only to cards purchased by the county.
“If you pay for them yourself, you buy what you want,” King said.
APPROVED: Purchase of right of way along CR 58 in Precinct 4 for $2,900; and the payment of $5,200 to survey for bridge work along CR 101-C in Precinct 2.
