Area plants being fired up
Published September 28, 2005
FREEPORT — Sirens and flares could penetrate the skies over Brazoria County in the coming days and weeks as area chemical plants return to service.
BASF and Dow Texas Operations shut down their facilities during the threat of Hurricane Rita last week, and neither sustained significant wind damage, officials said.
Dow’s hydrocarbon plants could begin flaring today, a company press release states. Nearby residents could hear sirens and other noises as the plant purges its steam lines, according to the statement.
BASF also will generate some noise as startup continues, said Sharon Rogers, a BASF spokeswoman.
“We’ll be doing an unusually high amount of horn testing as we put things back in service,” Rogers said.
In Old Ocean, ConocoPhillips’ Sweeny refinery and CP Chem’s facility also have initiated start-ups, officials said.
Both plants shut down as Hurricane Rita approached but weren’t damaged as the storm veered to the east early Saturday.
Flaring is possible during startup, ConocoPhillips spokeswoman Regina Slaydon said.
“We anticipate to be completely up and running by the end of the week,” Slaydon said.
Innovene, the BP subsidiary, also has begun restarting its Chocolate Bayou plant, said Jerry Ostergaard, a company spokesman.
