QUESTION: Why do people coming off North Velasco Street in Angleton onto Spur (Loop 274) in front of Whataburger think they have the right of way? The red sign on Velasco clearly states “Yield”; however, the drivers believe since they are entering off Velasco the traffic on the spur should slow and allow them to enter, and if not, they will merge, causing near-accidents. I have witnessed many a heated name-calling, finger-pointing, etc. because people refuse to obey the sign.
Can anything be done to alleviate this problem?
ANSWER: Our traffic engineering staff completed a field investigation and the need to enhance the current signing and striping was identified. Our field investigation revealed the need to:
1. Relocate the existing Yield sign on Velasco Street about 200 feet north from its present position.
2. Install a line called a “Yield Bar” on Velasco Street.
3. Install two pavement markings “Yield” and “Ahead,” about 200 to 250 feet upstream from the newly relocated Yield sign.
Our Brazoria Area Office will schedule crews to make the above changes.
We are confident this will be the solution to this situation that was reported. However, we always need the extra help of law enforcement in that region to make drivers comply with signs and traffic regulations, especially during the traffic rush hours.
