Donations benefit community
Published August 13, 2009
Thank you, community of Brazosport, for your support of the Rotary Club’s 2008 shrimp boil. Because of the success of our fundraiser, we were able to make donations back to the community throughout the past year.
Our donations calendar runs from shrimp boil to shrimp boil. Past President Ravi Singhania continued the criteria to donate based on health, hunger and humanity, which helped guide the donation committee’s decisions.
Rotary helped the Freeport Soccer Club obtain goals, nets, benches and equipment. We helped repair the roof at the Brazosport Medical Center after it was damaged by Hurricane Ike.
Money went to Junior Achievement of Brazoria County for classroom materials, and toward meals for the Youth Citizens Police Academy with the Lake Jackson Police Department.
We helped provide free flu shots for the community with Brazosport Regional Health System and helped purchase a new van for Brazoria County Veterans Services.
Money went to food, Christmas toys and gifts for the Brazosport Food Basket; toward a scholarship for a future teacher through BISD Project Teach; for new heaters for the Boys & Girls Club gym in Freeport; to pay freight for a fire pump and engine for Surfside Volunteer Fire Department; for food
and toiletries for Brazosport Cares Food Pantry; for books for first-graders in memory of Janice Eubank, a printer/copier for Grandparents Support Group Services; toward ads for the grouper and eel naming contest for Sea Center/Texas Parks and Wildlife; for tools and hardware for the Center for the Arts workshop; for treats for the Special Children’s Day at the Brazoria County Fair; for uniforms for the Lake Jackson Explorers of Post 390; to support the 787 seniors for Brazosport and Brazoswood Project Graduations; and for scholarships for SPCA of Brazoria County’s Kritters and Kids camp.
The Brazosport Planetarium has a new telescope for the community to use, and the Purple Penguins baseball team has new equipment and caps. Rotary also has donated money to the 2010 Migration Celebration for the Birds of Prey program for 1,800-plus students in our local schools.
In addition to the community donations, Jacque Cundieff and the Rotary scholarship committee awarded $26,500 in college scholarships to 20 area high school students to help further their education with proceeds from the 2008 shrimp boil.
The purpose of the donations is to benefit the local community. Rotary’s theme for 2009 is “The future of Rotary is in your hands,” and Rotary’s motto is “Service above self.”
We can be of service primarily because we are supported by the commitment and generosity of the Brazosport community’s businesses, industry and individuals.
On behalf of the Brazosport Rotary’s donation and scholarship committees, thank you for helping us make a difference. Rotary will be at Freeport Municipal Park on Saturday, and we anticipate another successful shrimp boil. Please come support President Ed Birdsong — along with the rest of the Rotary Club — enjoy the fun and good food at the “cool” RiverPlace.
Thank you in advance for your tremendous support.
Debby Soltesz of Lake Jackson is a member of the Brazosport Rotary Club.
