Columbia gets 1st win of season

Published September 19, 2009

WEST COLUMBIA — In a game that seemed like it would never end, the Columbia Roughnecks were able to hold off a never-ending series of passes Friday night to collect a 39-29 homecoming victory over Kashmere.

Columbia (1-2) survived a Ram offensive attack in which quarterback Darrell Ned threw the ball 47 times and completed 21.

The Roughnecks intercepted two of Ned’s passes and turned them into touchdowns, which proved to be the difference in a wild game.

“This was crazy,” Columbia coach Leland Surovik said. “Just when we thought we had the game in the bag, they came back on us.”

It looked as though it would be an easy night for the Roughnecks as they built a 20-0 lead in the first quarter.

Sean Flannel started the scoring for the Roughnecks when he capped a 57-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run with 6:23 left in the quarter.

Robert Thomas completed a 33-yard pass to Gray Raley down to the Kashmere 2 on a fake punt to set up the score.

Later in the period, Chaz Easton tackled Kashmere punter Jarmon Mattix following a high snap to give Columbia the ball at the Ram 25.

A few plays later, Flannel scored on a 10-yard run with 4:12 left in the period to help put the Roughnecks up 14-0.

The Columbia defense got the first of its two scores when defensive end Bradley Swanks grabbed a screen pass that bounced off a Ram receiver and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was missed, but Columbia owned a 20-0 lead with 3:57 left in the first quarter.

The Roughnecks continued their onslaught in the second quarter when Easton blocked a Kashmere punt that was recovered by Thomas at the Ram 5 with 10:15 left in the quarter.

Flannel scored his third touchdown one play later to put Columbia up 26-0 with 10:09 left in the half.

A 24-yard touchdown pass from Ned to Darius Wilborn and a one-yard touchdown plunge by Ned left the Rams down 26-13 with 1:39 left in the first half.

Taylor Johnican picked up the Columbia defense’s second score of the game with 40 seconds left in the first half when he picked off a Ned pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown, putting the Roughnecks up 32-13 at the half.

A 2-yard touchdown run by Ned with 46 seconds left in the third quarter and a two-point conversion left the Rams down 32-21 heading into the fourth quarter.

It wasn’t until Taylor Johnican capped a 70-yard drive with a 1-yard run with 7:36 left that it seemed the Roughnecks had the breathing room they needed. Columbia quarterback Daymond Lewis, who had 115 yards rushing in the game, had a 52-yard run down to the Ram 4 to set up the touchdown.

Surovik was glad to come away with the win, even though it turned out not to be easy.

“The kids got a little lax in the second half,” he said.

“We made some bad plays on special teams, but we were able to run the ball the way we wanted. The kids played hard. I was proud of them.”
