Sweeny nets first victory

Published November 21, 2007

SWEENY — The Sweeny Bulldogs dashed into the win column for the first time this year by racing past visiting El Campo 83-46 Tuesday night in a non-district basketball clash.

Terrell Bedford asserted himself well around the basket and finished with a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead the 1-2 Bulldogs. Junior sharpshooter Dane Hooker clocked out with 18 points, including a pair of early treys from the far corner that helped the home bunch jump to an 8-0 lead. Hooker, an all-district pick last year, also grabbed four rebounds, had three steals and handed out four assists.

“It’s nice to get a win,” Sweeny head coach Shannon Hooker said. “We lost to two pretty good teams to start out. Both Calhoun (Port Lavaca) and Dickinson are excellent teams. We knew coming into this game that we were a pretty good shooting team, but I wanted our kids to concentrate on playing some defense.

“I thought it was a good team effort tonight,” he said.

With Hooker scoring eight points in the opening stanza, the Bulldogs jumped off to a 17-8 lead and then held a 35-27 lead at the intermission as the sluggish Ricebirds came to life in the second quarter behind Anthony Terrell’s (15 points) hot outside shooting.

But the second half was all Bulldogs as Sweeny used a 21-9 run to take a commanding 56-36 lead going into the final quarter. Bedford, who scored 16 of his points in the second-half romp, got the Bulldogs going early in that quarter with a follow-up score and then came back with two more layups thanks to dandy dishes from point guard Tre Lemons.

Lemons had six assists and four steals to go along with his four points.

“Our kids played well tonight and El Campo wore down in the second half,” Hooker said. “But in all fairness, this was their first game and they came in here with only one day of practice after getting several of their players following the football season. They are a little rusty but they will get a lot better. We certainly caught them at a good time.”

Sweeny sophomore John Williams, a smooth-shooting southpaw, finished out the run-and-gun contest with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore teammate Chancley Wright clocked out with 11 points, including three treys.

The tough Bulldog defenders helped push the Ricebirds into 21 turnovers while Sweeny had just 13.

Angleton 76, Aldine MacArthur 61

Bubba Grant scored 20 points and Garrett Brown added 14 points and 10 rebounds Tuesday night to lead the Angleton Wildcats to a 76-61 home win over Aldine MacArthur.

Colton Kemp scored 15 points and Henry Josey chipped in with six points and six assists as the Wildcats (1-1) earned their first win of the year.

The game was tied at 38 at halftime but the Wildcats outscored MacArthur 16-6 in the third quarter to pull ahead.

“Getting that first win of the year always feels great,” Angleton head coach Tommy Penders said.

Lamar Johnson led MacArthur (0-2) with a game-high 26 points.

Angleton plays again at 3 p.m. Saturday at home against Bay City.
