Alvin youth to compete in motorcross event

Published March 31, 2006

ALVIN — While many 7-year-old boys dream about being Vince Young scoring the game winning-touchdown or Lance Berkman scoring the game-winning run, a child from Alvin Elementary School will live his own dream Saturday on a motorcycle.

Brian Coburn-Kennedy, a first-grade student at Alvin Elementary, will participate in the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge at Reliant Stadium. The exhibition is part of the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross tour stop in Houston.

The event will feature Brian’s idol, Ricky Carmichael. Since turning professional in 1996, Carmichael has five nation championships to his credit.

Thousands of 7- and 8-year-olds from all over the nation sent resumes to KTM for a chance to participate in the Junior Supercross Challenge exhibition. Just to be considered for the event, hopefuls had to meet a list of requirements that included above-average grades in school, at least one year of riding experience and the ability to ride an advanced track.

Of the resumes received, 500 of the most qualified riders were put into a lottery and 15 were chosen to ride at Reliant Stadium.

To the surprise of Brian’s parents, Laura and Chad Kennedy, their son’s name was picked.

Though small in size, Brian has an enormous dedication to the sport of motocross, Laura Kennedy said. Brian’s love for motocross started as soon as he was old enough to know what it was, she said, and his passion for the sport continues to grow.

“I hope that Brian takes this weekend as a learning experience for him, along with being able to meet his hero Ricky Carmichael,” Laura Kennedy said.

Brian has won many trophies in only three years of riding competitively, including a win in the 2005 Texas Gulf Coast Spring Motocross Championship, a competition with several stops throughout the southeast portion of the state.

Brian, known as Mighty Mouse, said he likely won’t even notice the crowd Saturday when he takes on the track to ride.

“I’m too excited to think about it,” Brian said. “I’m too excited and honored to be scared.”

Brian and the other participants will be treated like professional riders from the time they arrive at Reliant Stadium, Laura Kennedy said. There will be an autograph session with fans, and motorcycles and pit crews will be provided by KTM. All riders also will receive a commemorative plaque, a United States savings bond and prizes from sponsors.

Tickets prices to attend the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross range from $10 to $40. Ticket prices increase by $2 the day of the show. For ticket information, call (713) 629-3700 or the visit ticketmaster.com.
