Paul handily wins primary
Published March 8, 2006
ANGLETON — Brazoria County voters casting ballots in the Republican primary favored Ron Paul to continue representing the area as the U.S. representative for District 14.
Paul, who has held the seat since 1996, received 80.53 percent, or 8,826 votes, in the county, compared to Houston lawyer and Wharton resident Cynthia Sinatra’s 19.47 percent, or 2,134 votes, unofficial returns show.
Throughout District 14, Paul had a commanding lead with 70 percent of the precincts reporting. The congressman had 78 percent of the vote, compared to Sinatra’s 22 percent, the Associated Press reported.
The 70-year-old Paul, R-Surfside Beach, will face Democrat Shane Sklar, who served as executive director of the Independent Cattleman’s Association the last four years, in the Nov. 7 general election. Sklar, who was unchallenged in the Democratic primary, received 1,433 votes in the county.
The victor will represent the 10-county district, which stretches from Galveston County down the coast to Jackson County, about 100 miles northeast of Corpus Christi.
Paul couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday night.
Earning the nickname “Dr. No” for his opposition to most government programs, Paul has never voted to raise taxes during his tenure as a congressman, has defended private property rights and has introduced legislation to repeal estate taxes, according to his campaign Web site.
In recent years, Paul also has taken a stance against the war in Iraq, including authoring a resolution last year to withdraw U.S. troops. In February, he told The Facts that a pure democracy in Iraq would probably lead that country to align with Iran, which has been hostile to the United States.
Sinatra, the 52-year-old ex-wife of Frank Sinatra Jr. — son of the famous singer — used Paul’s stance on the war as ammunition during the campaign, saying “I support the president, and Dr. Paul doesn’t.”
Members of Congress serve two-year terms and make $150,000 a year.
